North of the 49th parallell, Wiarton Willie and Schubenacadie Sam both predicted an early spring. Fingers crossed!

I have heard that the groundhogs come up from their hibernation in early February, check out other groundhogs holes, see who is male or female, make a mental note of this, then go back into their own holes for 6 weeks. Then, mid March, they come out, remember where their chosen mate was, make new groundhogs, then go eat.

This is where the shadow seeing myth comes from.

I haven't seen the resident groundhog that lives under the garden shed in our yard yet this year but then again it is possible that it came out and the hawk got it.

I didn't know I had a groundhog until my dogs killed it.
