Default It's summer!

The Summer Solstice, which occurs at 2:46 AM EDT today (last night for the west coast), marks the beginning of Summer. The Summer Solstice is one of two points on the ecliptic, along with the Winter Solstice, at which the distance from the celestial equator is the greatest. The ecliptic is the great circle of the celestial sphere that defines the apparent path of the sun among the stars, or the earth's orbit extended to meet the celestial sphere (the plane of the earth's orbit extended to meet the celestial sphere).
