Back in August 02 I drove a new Boxster at the Monterey dealer, then went over to Honda and did the same thing in a pretty yellow S2K. Liked the car better than the Porsche, but the dealer had a $5,000 pack on top of the MSRP. Told the salesman I'd write a check on the spot for sticker. He said he'd ask the boss. Bit later he called and told me he had "wonderful news" - his manager had lowered the pack to a measly $1,500. Meanwhile I'd called around and located a Berlina Black at Capitol Honda in San Jose. The salesman, Francisco Chong, got it for me for sticker. Week or so later I saw the yellow car I'd looked at Monterey on the street with new car registration taped in the window. It pays to shop but at the same time if you can pry a $5K bonus for yourself out of a customer by just asking for it, more power to you! Caveat Emptor.
