Default Watkins Glen HPDE - always so expensive?

I'm looking at the schedules for a few HPDE organizers, and just about every event at the Glen is significantly more expensive than any other track. Are you just paying for the privilege of driving on such a prestigious track? Is it worth it?

Specifically, I'd like to do the NASA event in August, but it's $615, and it's on weekdays. If it's worth it, I'll try to save up and go.

That event is a DE only event. There won't be any races on those days to help offset costs. That said, you will get considerably more track time.

WGI is a BIG BOY track / bucket list track. Big, fast and fun. You can also work 1/2 a day, drive 1/2 a day if that interests you.

I likely won't be there.

Thanks for the info. I just talked to TJ and he said that NASA also has to spend more to host their events there. I suppose that all makes sense. Would it be a bad idea for a beginner to go there?

As far as working there, any idea who I could talk to for more info? Like what I might be asked to do, how much track time I could expect in half a day, cost savings, etc? That might be a good option.

You're not really a beginner.

Well, I still FEEL like a beginner. Haha! I'll shoot Alan an email when I have a better idea of whether or not I can make it. I'm trying to get some of my car-guy friends to come with me, but that seems unlikely so far. Would be nice to have some friends there to hang out with.

WGI was only the 3rd day at a track I ever did.

I did a Bertil Roos 3/4 day in open wheel Formula Fords at Pocono, then my first track day with the DV Miata Club, and then, WGI the next spring.

I probably had the same nerves and anxiety about doing WGI as the first time I went onto the Nascar bowl at Pocono in my car and realized I wasn't going to hit the wall if I drove within my limits and trusted the cars limits were beyond mine.

I did find WGI 'confusing'. I kept getting my turns mixed up. This is 5/6? No, 7/8? 11/12? or similar. Thanks to Doug (Triple-H) and his time as instructor, I got through the day and am glad I did it.

WGI prices have gone up since they repaved in 2015/16. But when your WOT 2-3-4 or even 1-2-3-4, its worth it.

Yeah, I've all but decided to go there. Just need to make sure I'll have the funds and the time off work, since the NASA event is on weekdays. I do see that the PCA has some cheaper events there, but I don't know much about them and every chapter is sort of like it's own organization, their own rules, etc. It's confusing.. lol.
