Anyone else find Manchester BTS overrated?
Saw the movie. Was looking forward to some thing of greatness with some emotional payoff at the end. Sat and watched nothing happen for two plus hours and then the credits roll.
Yeah a couple bad things happen, and yes I did think Casey Affleck gave a very solid performance but NOTHING HAPPENS. So one plot point introduced is that the engine in the boat is going to blow. So what do they do? Buy a replacement engine. Problem solved. The kid's mother is supposed to be a train wreck that he wants to reconnect with and there is all this buildup, so what does he do? He has lunch with her and then that plotline is just dropped. The kid does not like the fact his dad is in the freezer......and that does not really go anywhere.
It is two people grieving for two hours, nothing develops, then they go fishing and credits roll. Why does everyone think this movie is so brilliant? Most of the movie is a stone faced Casey Affleck driving a hoopty Jeep back and forth across town to drop off his nephew who is trying to get in the pants of two different teenagers. Whooptie do.
I would have thought this made an ok rental just because of Affleck's performance but both my wife and I and everyone I talked to who has seen this movie was totally bored. It reminds me of the hyped "Atonement" a few years back.
It is not like the movie is totally without merit, but it is nothing special IMO.
