The Big Heat, 1953
TCM or even youtube? This is film noir at it's best. Black and white , it stars Glen ford, Lee Marvin, Gloria graham among the other bit part stable actors of the age. It's a hard boiled detective film, several acts of violence that just happen without warning. This is a Fritz Lang film, Fritz is a talented director who did many of this genre and loved the light and dark contrast in making his films. Ford is the hero, antihero or sorts. Marvin is a spineless heavy that picks on women...with abuse. there is a bad guy crime boss who is "respectable" in the eyes of the world and own everyone downtown. Corruption within the force leads to a suicide and allot of "hey lay off" from higher ups. Ford resigns to find the answers , looses his wife in the process, and keeps his snub nose cause he paid for it.....Everyone eventually gets theirs, random acts of kindness from strangers....a good plot . I give it a 9 outta 10 because Glen is my man and nails the part, and like all Lang's work it's a work of art... artfully directed.
