Man on Fire!
*SPOILER ALERT*
Great movie. It was not based on a true story though. I thoroughly enjoyed it. THe slow start was still a great build up to establishing the relationship between Pita and Creasy.
I think the reason he let himself die was because he kept asking Chris Walken if they would be forgiven for what they'd done. By getting Pita back he was forgiven for his sins.

I, too, thought he'd take himself and the baddies out with a C4 suppository.
As to motivation, he knew his wound was fatal and saw this as redemption.
What didn't make sense is why "the Voice" and his guys just waste him on the bridge. Why bother to frisk him when you have all that firepower and a safe distance from which to use it.
It was also not clear what the purpose of keeping Pita alive was except to have a twist at the end. At least if he'd uses her as a prostiture, keeping her would have made sense. We knew he was ruthless and had no problem with killing victims.
While I liked the story in general, I found the overuse of subtitles, even going so far as English sub-titles for English speaking characters, very distracting. Also the flash style cinematography was just too "Hey, look what I can do."
As soon as she was taken, I suspected tha father was going to have somthing to do with it.
