OSCARS 2022 drama- hey its an awards show, no wait its a boxing match!
Well, Will Smith has decided that smacking other people is completely fine in public- great example there pal. Surprised Chris Rock didn't smack him back or if he had CCW, shoot him (EDIT- this is S.A.R.C.A.S.M...say it with me). You can bet Rock's sharp wit and barbs will later sting Smith.
So, that was about the most exciting Oscars I've seen in some time. There is a Japanese television feed that didn't censor the altercation. Essentially, Rock replied to Smith's attack with "it was a joke about G.I. Jane." To which Smith replied "Keep my wife's name out of your f--king mouth."
Glad to see Dune directed by Canadian Villeneuve won some awards, though.

I don't condone what Smith did or what was said afterwards. I don't mind someone taking up for their wife but this isn't the way.
However, getting slapped doesn't justify pulling a gun...ever. Very few situations justify that and this was waaay down the order of that list.
Small part of me thinks this was an elaborate skit to get more notoriety for the Oscars to make them buzzworthy. I wouldn't bet on it but staged "incidents" do occur in Hollywood.

If it was staged, it would mean that those 1st tier actors who went to Will Smith to comfort him were also duped. I think it was highly inappropriate for Will Smith to have behaved in such a manner. I think the joke was light hearted and tongue in cheek kind of way. Jada Smith proudly displayed her hair loss in public view and not trying to hide her hair loss with wig. I just don't get someone with such a high profile would resort to such display of aggressive behavior in widely televised show such as Academy Award. Unbelievable and what a shame!
My main thing here is how everyone is coming to arms about how this is a bad example for their kids, for other artists etc. Your kids idolize people singing about killing people, glamorizing gang life and then they spend all night playing GTA and first person shoot em ups, almost every show on TV is something to do with murder and killing, parents go online and bully each other to no end about politics ....and then they want to get up on their high horse about this being a bad example lol. People are so disgustingly fake. Hell a lot of the movies that get these actors these awards probably set a worse example than this act did.
He should not have reacted that way, but hilarious to see how everyone choses their moral ground.

I'm being extreme for effect- if you know me, I typically play devil's advocate. It could have escalated easily on stage, but Rock genuinely kept it in check and didn't allow it beyond the initial attack- no doubt, he was the bigger man and Smith came off as a nut case.
The reality is Smith was the one who security should have hoisted out of the place for attacking another patron of the event- do not pass go. Since when is behaviour like this condoned...and then they allow him to blather on to accept his award on stage. As a movie fan, who's been following the Oscars for decades, I am really disappointed that this came to be. What was that school yard saying about sticks and stones? Smith would have done well to remember that rhyme.
JUST IN- the Academy and SAG-AFTRA is launching formal review and considering sanctioning Smith apparently. We'll see how this progresses.

I seriously doubt anything substantive will come out of this. It's the usual song and dance thing to appease the public without any significant feel the pain consequence for Will Smith. I haven't watched Oscar for ages and it does not carry the same class and prestige it once did in my view. I wouldn't hold my breath.
I am curious how much people expect to come of this really? I mean, if you and a friend got into an argument and one of you slapped the other and no charges were pressed, would you expect the town and neighborhood to step in and somehow punish you, cancel you, etc? I totally get the whole this is not the way to handle it thing and setting an example thing, but seriously, just how much would we expect to be done here? This kind of stuff happens literally every day and no one expects there to be a national issue made of it. Instead of just making this a "hey kids this was not the way to handle things and we apologize" thing, we expect there to be some big inquisition, talk about people's careers being damaged, etc.
But, when football players, basketball players, etc get into fights on the field/court no one gets on the news about it, talk shows do not feel they need to virtue signal to the max by having whole episodes about it, etc.
I seriously think people just need to get over it and move on lol. If the organization feels they need to penalize him over this, then so be it (just like a team getting a penalty for a fight on court/field) and that is within their realm of control.
