Default A question for the cultured buncha ya' out there

Anyone that has seen a broadway show please give me your input. I recently saw Beauty and the Beast last week and realized how much I was missing out since my last Broadway show.

My question is if you have seen a broadway show (not just heard about it) what is your favorite one and would you recommend it for a romantic date type of thing (6 mo anniversary coming up and mah woman is the type that likes to get romanced). Anyone's 2 cents would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Broadway, IMHO, is the last place you want to get your culture. It's as corporate and as hackneyed as the multiplex movies. . . just way more expensive.

That said, Avenue Q has come HIGHLY recommended. As funny as "Jerry Springer" was, it was still very formulaic in many parts.

The last musical that I thought was truly worth it's salt was "RENT," but even then, that too was a borrowed story.

If you're gonna drop $35-$80+ per seat on live theatrics, I'd sooner try to catch any number of Operas, both old and new. The challenging ideas are over there. . .
. . . I'm also openly stating that I don't "get" Broadway. I'm more of a Symphony and Opera guy.

I haven't been to New York in forever so I'm not sure if its still there or not, but Phantom of the Opera is a classic and I think would be a good show to see for an anniversary. Lion King and Les Mis are excellent as well. Cats was a classic. . .but left broadway a few years ago.

I've never seen Les Miserables but the movie was awesome... so I'm sure the play is great as well.

And Cats... I wish that was still playing. Never seen that one either but according to people it was one of the best Broadway shows ever. It played for something like 20 or 25 years straight before being let go.

I hate broadway shows, but since the wife loves them I get forced to see a few.

Phantom= sucked donkeys (nice special effects though)
Rent= sucked rhino
Urinetown=sucked

could not wait to get out of those.

Les Mis was great. Hate to admit it but I enjoyed almost the entire thing. Not touring anymore though. Should be the benchmark. Great music (I hate musicals), unreal stage, good story, lots of upbeat chorus pieces to break up the sappy brooding solos.

Have fifth row center for Spamalot in a couple weeks.
