If you come in via Robbinsville, got north on 129 to just before you get to Tapoco Lodge, there is a road to your right that will get you to Fontana. Must warn you, it is rough but I think it is more negotiable than the other way. 28 would be very twisty.

I couple years ago when my car broke down at the Dragon I limped it to Fontana, then had to tow it home. The only sensible way out was across the Dragon, and honestly it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
This was with a long frame Tacoma and a 4 wheel Uhaul trailer (with trailer brakes). It was the first time I'd ever hooked up to the new truck, and I've only towed a handful of times before then. So if your trailer isn't excessively long, and you have a bit of experience towing, then I really wouldn't worry about it. I believe the next shortest alternative is an extra hour or hour and a half drive, including high elevations and fairly steep climbs/descents (Cherohala Skyway). This is all assuming you are coming down I-75 through Knoxville. If you come from the east, I can't help you with routing.

John, if you enter the directions in your GPS, it will take you to the dragon. I believe these will have to be your directions from NY

what he said. forgot you all come from that direction. coming up 28 that way wouldn't be bad at all, especially compared to the dragon. 28 has a couple tight bends, but nothing that would be a problem (to the best of my memory, at least!)

There are some tight spots on the dragon where you may have to cross the yellow online. If I don't convoy with you, have Justin in front to make sure the road is clear. I need to check, but if you come in through robbinville up US129 to deals gap and then make a right, that's another good way with the trailer.

I81 South.
I26 south to Ashville.
40 west, catch the Great smokey mountain expy all the way to Fontana via 28.
This road encompasses a few roads, but is the fastest way there especially with trailer. Trust me I've been there 10 times.
Once you are going on 40 west from Ashville, the navi should set you straight.
