Dragon Events Tail of the Dragon (Highway US129) 318 curves in 11 miles, is America’s number one motorcycle and sports car road.

Going forward, is there a better date for RTD?

So corrected!! The Dragon was one of the drives for both Asheville events.

I think we just need to REALLY plan ahead (like, book it for the following year while at DFR, pretty sure that's how it was managed before, we'll just need to know dates for RTD by then) for Fontana if we're going to get it locked in. With the dragon seemingly more popular with each passing year, I don't know that changing weekends is going to get much of a better outcome, it's just busy every weekend there.
I'm glad getting it off of Mother's Day has allowed you to attend again! The dates for 2024 & 2025 were set back in the Spring of 2023. The big thing we wanted to do was get it off of Mother's Day. I tried experimenting with different dates these past two years, but one of the challenges is getting dates that do not conflict with other major car group events. I want everyone to be able to attend and for the dates to be convenient for everyone. I also want to maximize attendance because more attendees = more fun. The unfortunate reality I've learned over these two years of experimentation is that there is no date that will be good for absolutely everyone. Every new oddball date I've tried, I've heard from some who weren't able to make it and some who finally were. Now I'm sorta thinking that by moving them around every time, maybe that will help the people with more strict schedules cycle through and attend some events on occasion rather than never being able to attend and those of us with more flexible schedules can still just come whenever dates they are.

I'm reaching out to Marie now to set dates for 2026. Due to the popularity of the area, it is basically a requirement to set them at least a year in advance to get any dates that are even remotely desirable. I know quite a few people like to attend our meet and several other group meets, some at the Dragon and others in places like Virginia. I try not to conflict with those dates either so that the more hardcore vacationers can live the life some of us only dream of.

When it comes to moving it to different locations to do different roads, I agree that sounds like fun. David has been talking about doing this for years, but I couldn't rope him into it. I certainly don't want to lose our good graces with Fontana as it has proven helpful in a few scenarios and they give us a discount. I sort of viewed the low attendance as a temporary thing and expected it to pick back up, but that seems increasingly less likely. Moving the physical location would be similar to moving the dates in that it may prevent some from attending while allowing others to attend. If that is the consensus I'm happy to start looking around, but also I don't think there is a day between now and June that I'll be able to put any significant time into it so no promises. I'll hold off on setting any dates for Fall 2026 yet. As I zoom around, I do still see quite a few road closures to the Northeast. Some of the route planning will be a bit tricky, but I'm sure the area would be happy to have visitors.
