You could possibly intersect with the Canadian caravan at the end of our first day. We generally make the drive down pretty twisty so when we arrive at the event , it is already old hat. Takes about 3 days generally.

I am leaving PA on 5/9 early and plan to take 81 down most of the way. Interested in meeting up with others if it works out.

I've had a plan change. I'm leaving Alexandria around 07:00 to drive to Raleigh to meet Justin and Melody and then across NC to Greensboro to meet Gene and then on to Asheville for dinner at Cucina 24. Bama Dave is going to meet us in Asheville and then we'll drive to Fontana as a group after dinner. If you'd like to come along for the entire trip or just for dinner in Asheville, let me know before May 1 so that I can modify the reservations. Dinner will be around $100 per person.
