The calm before the storm (v8 swap)

Starting my ls swap thread, because most of all I find a lot of information to start with; direction and guidance, most actual build threads I find get to about this point and never continue. I sincerely hope to not be one of them lol. I am motivated and almost home from deployment to get to work!

For now it will be the start; back in Sept ‘17 my f22 lost oil control in cyl4. I was less than a month from deployment and had a decision. Coming from roughly 25k (mileage) worth of boost and 400+whp for the majority of the time I felt I could take advantage of myself being away and getting ahead start on some wicked NA comparable power (hoping for more reliability) this could possibly be debated but time will only tell.

I had less then two weeks left in States before deployment, so I began the race against time. Prepping for removal and sale of parts to be sold that wouldnt be used on the swap.

TO be continued. I have a ton more photo’s leading to my deployment and then parts aquired for the swap so far. Ill be breaking this up and catching up to current events throughout the weeks leading back to actually starting this massive project.

Without further a’duu having a rats nest but a clean canvas (with vision lol) and my rubber duck. I began drilling the spot welds on the beam and taking note of things I wanted shave, and research what I needed to do in the rear section to clear heads/bellhousing; the grinder was in the batter box.

Hard at work after work. I continued to peel back the layers of this lovely white onion. The bay still had to be modified and I wanted to redo the paint in the bay.

Finally the decision was made to keep things as accessible as possible and able to trouble shoot easily. I want to be able to run pretty much the essentials in the bay as well as harness etc. ill use most of the stock holes for the zip tie points and threaded holes for accessories. Slapped primer base down due to me being away and did not want to see rust start while I was gone.

Looking good. My swap took 2 years. Worth every second when I feel that low-end torque and hear that V8 rumble!

Ill have pretty much the essentials (big items for completion); and I could rush it, but just dont want to have those thoughts of “I should of done this” or that.
Ill start working on it asap but keeping the pressure off from finishing it will ensure I get things right how, and where I want them. Thanks!

my motivation continues through ls swap first start ups on YT lol.

So the engine, transmission were chosen. Gmpp crate 376/430 // a low mileage camaro t56. Next was all the insane odds and end stuff. I got my allowerks mount setup and quite a few other essential pieces parted out from an s2k ls build (imtehk) btw he went above beyond blasting the aluminum parts (power steering re-location brackets) and RE- powdercoating the mounts for a fresh finish. I couldnt believe the offer and was very appreciative! Thanks! Again If you ever read this. I tried getting as much as possible from his part out and only really needed the sway bar re-location and trans ES isolator for the mount in retro spect to what comes with the IM kit. I got the swap book, a summit ls mini starter, extended steering shaft already done up, the wilwood clutch master with ry-wire adapter. I only have a picture of what he took before sending at this time. Further installation photos, instruction, and info will continue later on. I read and decided to go with hooker ls swap cast manifolds for reliability and operability with the alloywerks mounts. Picked up a Tick stock clutch package (ls7) thats compatible with “lsx” applications, and a 98-02 internal throwout bearing slave.

The FAQs on the IM website instruct to use a short throw shifter, one for a “comparable” feel to the s2k trans but also heard its hard to get easy selection of every gear without one. I chose the Hinson camaro t56 STS for this duty and hope to be pleased by my selection. Time will tell, and if I dont like it; I’m sure I can trade or figure out another angle.

Ill be using a tweaked harness, E38/s2k dual ecu setup (58xx DBW) along with a dakota digital box using the t56 vss sensor. Also have information for modifying the gm pedal I have with the s2k pedal mount. Further instruction TB continued.

The Samberg v2-3 intake setup (rx7 intake) is something im brain storming. Once I get home and closer to completion and have measurements etc. ill be possibly working with Jason schmuck to get a tucked radiator and custom “clone” of this product as it wouldnt be a direct fit. I like the idea here and wish to have something like this in the future for completion as an optimal and preferred induction system. The most obvious thing that stuck out to me is the center support for the hood latch etc. a simple Y intake pushed forward and ducted off towards the front is my forward thinking rn.

The exhaust picture is someone else that completed their ls swap and Im using it to go by for a example of how I would like to route my exhaust. The hookers are the 2.5” option so will likely run that staright back or merge to a 3” would be preferred, along with HFC’s in place and mufflers.

The flex a lite pipe and bung is how I will route the steam vent port. Running to the top radiator hose, the outgoing “hot” coolant to be cooled would push any air to the radiator depending on which ever route I take ie. Tucked radiator (with expansion tank) or simpler setup oem mounted but increased capacity direct fit/replacement radiator.

tehk was kind enough to give me the part#’s for the inner/outer tie rods for the re-location setup. He was gonna sell me his but wanted to be able to roll and steer his chassis around so instead dropped price on deal and I just picked up Moog suspension oem replacement/combination; That according to him is the same swap dealer sells just marked up.
