The LS motor is one of the best motors available. The F20/22 are fine but not compared to the performance in the LS package.

I would rather start with a Miata to see a huge benefit. The S2000 is capable of making impressive power on the stock motor with minimal supporting mods, it isn't particularly light, stock examples are holding their value well (or appreciating), and the engine has a lot to do with the character of the S2000 as a high-strung, exciting car to drive aggressively.
