Europe oil

Hi guys, i can not get any 5w-30 syntetic oil for benzin engines. All i can found are either 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-60. 5w-30 is only for diesel cars in these days so i would like to know what u guys are filling up into your babies :)

thanx a lot

You can use 0w-40 . I ve used that. And now im using Castrol edge 10w-60. :hello:

you should NOT use 0W40

at least 5W !

And especially not in warm/hot countries!

Castrol 10W60 is not Honda specified (could lose your warranty) but its a good oil!

Tolgahan Ures 06-08-2007 01:05 AM

Hmmm. The weather is not too hot here (Max 35*) . We also used the 0w-40 in a s2k race car too . We didnt see any problems .

You are right about the warranty but i dont take my car to the honda dealer :D .

0WXX ist said to not work properly with VTEC under certain circumstances

Get your facts straight before making comments.

5W-30 "for diesel engines" is just as good - maybe even better - for petrol engines.
Diesel engines have high torque at low revs = the oil has to be strong = shear stable = good!

0W-40 is also good, just a little to thick for the F20 IMO, you'll loose some HP at higher revs.
The F20 was desinged with xxW-30 in mind.
I've used it before, now with the 0W-30 I DO notice better gas milage.

5W-40 is a little thicker at lower temps.
It depends on where you live, how cold it gets in the morning.
Thinner oil when cold is ALWAYS better.
Your valvetrain will thank you!

10W-60 IS NOT RIGHT FOR THE F20 ENGINE!!!
WAY TO THICK AT OPERATING TEMP!!
THICK OIL = LESS FLOW = NOT WHAT YOU WANT AT 9000 RPM!
DO NOT USE IT!!!

I'm using 0W-30 "diesel engine oil" without any problems.
Thin in the morning
Thick enough at operating temp.
Full syn oil, high shear stable.
Shell Helix Ultra X 0W-30.
Not cheap though.

So Mr.Oil, why do many race engine use 10W-60 ?!

Tolgahan Ures 06-08-2007 11:01 PM

^ Yes Why ?

:)
I'm not Mr Oil, I didn't think of this.
I've spend a lot of time reading on BITOG.
BITOG = BobIsTheOilGuy, a web based forum about engine oil.
http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/ubbthreads.php

About the 10W-60:
SAE 60 weight = 21.9 - 26.1 cSt @ 100C
SAE 30 weight = 9.3 cSt - 12.5 cSt. @ 100C
For reverence: water (H2O) = 1 cSt at 20C at sea level.
(water doesn't get thinner when it gets warm or cold - it boils or freezes :p )

At operating temp that oil - a 60 weight - will be about twice (2!) as thick as a 30 weight.
That means that at the same oil pump revs the pump puts out oil at higher pressure.
The oil pump bypass valve opens at a certain fixed pressure, that has nothing to do with oil flow.
Thicker oil means higher pressure at lower flow levels.
Less oil flow is not good.

Even if my S2000 would spend all its life at the track (it doesn't) I would never use a 10W-60.
Way to thick.
Maybe.. use a syn XXW-40 without an oil cooler, with an oil cooler I would use a full syn xxW-30.
For daily (spirited) driving a xxW-30 is all you need.
IMO a syn 0W-30 is best, because its thin at a cold start.
IMO every start below operating temp = a cold start.

Its a common misconception that thicker oil = better.
Thicker oils give less flow at the same pressure.
Not good in any engine.
Btw.. 10W-60 oils usually shear down (get thinner) very quickly.
So after only 1000 miles or so you'll be driving with a 50 weight.
Why do they shear down?
10W-60 oils need a lot of viscosity index improvers, chemicals that control the oil viscosity.
Those chemicals will be mechanically broken down (inside crankshaft journals, valvetrain, oil pump, etc) and that will change how thin or thick the oil is.
IOW: 10W-60 oils are not shear stable.
IMO it more a marketing gimmick.
10W-60 "Racing" oil... yeah I race all the time to work and getting grocery's: I want that too!!!
:p

0W-30 full syn oil are much more shear stable, IOW they are thin but stay that way and do not get any thinner.
I've had an oil analysis done on my Shell 0W-40.
(posted the results on S2ki and on BITOG)
New that oil should be 13.5 Cst.
After 10500 km it was still 13.2 cSt.
Thats only a smal change = shear stable.

Its your car, its your engine, I think you're not doing it any favors putting 10W-60 in it.
Find a true full syn oil, in 5W-30 or 0W-30.
That is IMO the best oil for the F20C2 (and F22C2).

I've never seen a "diesel engine only" oil.
Never.

To the OP: what brands are you referring to?
