Oil specifications for EU
 
Picked my s2000 02' last friday. On my second oil checking (750 km) I had to fill up to the higher mark with the oil provided by the mechanical's leader of the Honda's dealer. After read the last service update about s2000 oil consumption (see FAQs) I'm really afraid. The added oil is ESSO Ultron 0W-30 Full Synthetic. I've called to Honda Spain this afternoon and they assure me (:confused:) that I've to use synthetic, even for the initial factory's oil filling when, theoretically (as say in this Service Update), you've to use 10W-30 petroleum-based oil for filling or premature change (driving under severe conditions) and not use any synthetic oil for the first 12000 km...

I'm no expert, but I've seen reports on this site about not using synthetic first 10.000KM I use Shell Ultra Performance 0W40 fully synthetic after 10.000. I wouldn't be too worried though. It's better to top off the oil with synthetic than risking running empty. Don't know whether mixing will have bad results though.

I was worried too when I was told by the dealer to use 0W-40 full synthetic to refill. The dealer checked back with Honda Switzerland and confirmed.
I was worried because one usually should use mineral oil to properly break in an engine because it gives you more friction. Synthetics lubricate just too good.
But then I found a specialist (local tuner, explained me already in all detail how to break in and drive for a long engine life) and he told me this:

1) You can mix synthetic and mineral oil. No adverse effects.
2) You have to refill with the same or better quality. If you don't know what's in there already, use the best (0W-40 full synth).

I have 5000km on MY2002 and poured in 1.5 Liter 0W-40 synth already. If there was mineral oil in there before the only negative effect would be that break-in would take a bit longer. The first part and most important part (1000km) would have been done with Honda's factory oil. The rest with a mixture.

Hi Guys,

I'll be having my first European oil change in a few weeks time. I will have about 13.000 kilometers on the car by than.

Until now, I have been running normal mineral oil (also after my first oil change at 8000 km or rather 5000 miles), but I would like to switch to the prescribed oil now.

So, can you guys confirm that the prescribed oil is in fact the 0W40 synthetic oil?

I discussed this with my mechanic a while back and I think he mentioned they use 0W30 Shell Ultra Performance fully synthetic. I chose the 0W40 though. Motto: if it's good for Ferrari F1 then it must be good for my S2K.

Nueweiler is right. Keep an eye on your dipstick. You need to top up with oil of the same or better quality. Personally I added the best mineral oil I could find on the market (Mobil Super S 10W30). I sure other brands will do fine as well. Then at 10,000 KM, I changed to Mobil1 synthetic 0W40. You must leave in the factory oil until at least 10,000 KM. I have had zero oil consumption since I passed the 10K mark and changed to synthetic.
