I am the "STR" guy that used to live there. You will love the Dixie region SCCA. They put on some good events!

As far as Valdosta...... Have you visited the area? I would go get a feel of it before you plan on buying a house. I liked it, but.... I love the mountains. I had a good time, all the beaches are within a couple hours. It is a smaller town, but it offers a lot. I have a few friends that have bought houses in Valdosta. I would make sure you want to stay in that town for at least 5 years before trying to PCS, then you can rent your house or try to sell it. Hook up with Anarchy187 he lives in a nice neighborhood, mine wasn't too bad either. I would suggest living over towards that area, that way you are close to downtown Valdosta (where everything is) and somewhat close to base.

Cool thanks guys. Yea it's my first house, I have done a lot of researched and talked to people about the process, and feel pretty comfortable with that. As far as why, I can get a VA loan (don't have enough cash for a real down payment) and pay 700-800 per month after insurance and tax, as opposed to renting an equivalent place for 900-1100 per month. Then whenever I PCS go ahead and rent it out. Mostly looking for advice on locations and such.

I plan on taking some permissive TDY to check out the area between training TDY's. I have talked to a few friends and instructors who have been stationed there, and unless they completely misrepresented it, the wife and I should like it. We both grew up in towns very similar in size and such to Valdosta (albeit in the northeast). I also have some family moving to that general area ahead of me (for different reasons). But of course I will go check it out on my own first before finalizing any decisions. Also, since the only locations for my airframe are Moody, DM, and Kirtland (but only as an instructor), odds are I will be there for a while and most likely be back some time after I leave. Ill contact Anarchy187 and get some tips from him too.

Awesome, I'll wish you good luck on house hunting then!! From what I understand, it's still a buyers market. You shouldn't have any problems finding what you want in Valdosta, it's a nice place from what I've seen of it.

Yea the market looks great from what i have seen. We are hoping for a 1500-1700sqft place built in the last 10-15 years, 2 car garage, within a 15 minute drive of the base for under 150,000. and from what I have seen online, there seems to be no shortage of places that meet that criteria.

I paid 120k two years ago for 1780sqft right down the road from the hospital. Granted I don't have a garage (carports actually), you should find some places that exceed what your looking for in that price range.

Myself and a buddy of mine both have s2k's and are both stationed at Moody. I'm E&E on the C-130's.

Yea I am pretty excited, houses are so cheap down there LOL, I grew up in NY and NJ where a house that meets my criteria costs between 185,000 and 240,000.

Sweet! I'm at the Rock right now working on my C-130 qual before going to Kirtland for HC-130 school.
