The black in the mini logo is a sliver of plastic that, over time, just lifts off all in one piece. Like the Ford logo's loosing all their blue. Same thing. 
the Air B&B has some people from Texas there for 10 days (they just left this morning) They had a MINI. Same thing - the badges had lost the black part that outlined the word MINI.

The one I saw yesterday looked like it had slowly faded away but the car looked pretty new. Struck me as odd.
