HOA's are cringeworthy... it seems to be the norm now.

Us, too. Our house lost half it's value in the first year after we purchased it and we have been climbing back every since. I sincerely doubt we will ever get what we paid for it, let alone make any money. Breaking even is the best we are ever going to do. That is why I am so adamant that it pay for 100% of our selling and relocation costs. I may not make any money on it but I'll be damned if I am going lose another dime.

I run hot and cold on them. I like that they enforce some sort of standards but I do not at all like the idea of having to run paint colors and window covering selections past them. A happy medium is okay. Just no parking nazis please.

I won't buy a house with a HOA. F that.

Luckily there aren't many up here.

My dads house has a HOA, no cars are allowed to be parked outside.

I wouldn't mind too much if it were for the good of the community, but some of the rules are just ridiculous. Not parking in the yard, sure, but in the driveway? Nope, pass.

They're everywhere here. The fees are through the roof too. $1296.13 mortgage plus $235.00 HOA dues... Can't do it. They're anywhere from $125.00 a month to $600.00 - just for HOA. Dangit, man. That definitely falls under the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" clause.

NoVA is just like what Alex is saying. It is very, very hard to find a community here that has zero HOA.
