I just want some more tech in the car. Thinking about cutting the dash and doing a double-din nav/stereo but I understand it requires extensive modification to the AC vents. Sounds like a royal PITA, but I'm sure the finished product would be very nice.
I have the Nexus 7 16GB (prior to them releasing the 4G 32GB version). It would be great to do, but not necessarily in the S, though many people have installed navis in the S (I have a screen that's on an arm). http://lifehacker.com/5980076/this-d...-road-with-you http://landoftechnology.com/2013/das...s-7-projectn7/
Ideally I would have a double-din stereo with nav. That way I can control all my audio via touchscreen and adapt the current single din slot into a storage cubby. That would eliminate my need for a tablet in the car. The trouble is just installing it. Can't flush-mount a double-din with the JDM bezel without modification of the airbag bracket or the air vents... unless you make a protruding bezel that somehow doesn't look bad. I guess you could buy a dash from a salvage, hack it up, mold in your protruding bezel, and then reupholster it to look clean and OEM. I would try that, but I'd have to make a pact with myself to keep the car forever. This would be at least a $2000 project... At which point it makes it seem like modifying the AC vents for a flush mount would end up being a better route. Of course you could always do an in-dash Nexus 7, but that really doesn't do any good as far as audio control goes. If I cut the dash, I want to eliminate my current HU completely. I need to stop thinking about this before I do something stupid. I get caught up in DIY projects too easily. I wish Kenwood had an Android/IOS app to control 100% of HU functionality via bluetooth. That'd be sick.
I remember the going rate was about $700 to cut the dash and mount the alpine navi screen. Talk to Mike from Philly, if he's still around, maybe even Skip did it?? Though, you're right, it would seem somewhat useless just to have the nexus 7 without being able to reduce the need for the HU. |
