Fast & Furious Wins the Drag Race
Vin Diesel demands respect! Over seventy-two million dollars worth of respect! Not only did Fast & Furious take in more than double the ticket sales of the #2 film this weekend (Monsters vs. Aliens), but it had the best April debut ever. As in, of all time. (The previous title-holder was Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson's 2003 comedy, Anger Management.) F&F also had the highest opening on record for a car-themed movie, beating out, um, Cars. So soak it all in, Vin, and bask in your moment of glory. Sure, Saturday Night Live may have spoofed your testosterone-filled flick (warning: adult humor ahead) http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/vid...urious/1081305/ . And yes, anyone who unknowingly sat in the D-Box motion-enhanced seats that premiered in theaters showing your movie might have thrown out their backs and/or regurgitated their popcorn. But hey, no one said victory would be easy.
Rounding out the top five were The Haunting in Connecticut, Knowing, and I Love You, Man. The films in second through fifth place had all already been out for two or three weeks, but the number six spot went to newbie Adventureland. Greg Mottola's follow-up to Superbad has been getting pretty good reviews, so I have a feeling it might be around for a while thanks to positive word-of-mouth.
And what became of some of the indies we talked about last week? Paris 36, which showed at only seven theaters, made a respectable $322,000. Gigantic played at only one lone cineplex, and brought in $10,500. At least those films learned an important lesson this weekend: next time, add some fast cars into the mix and watch the money roll in!
