George Mason Univ

The +1's son will be starting at George Mason in January (as a freshman). Have any of you attended there? Just looking for opinions about the school and campus life, etc. :hello:

9k_on_occasion 12-07-2011 05:07 AM

I went there about 15 years ago, when it was the largest commuter school in the state. It was pretty much a ghost town on the weekends, but they've built a ton of dorms and junk since then so I'd assume it's not so bad now.

MsPerky 12-07-2011 05:40 AM

Yes, it is still about 2/3 commuter, but I'm hoping there is a bit more going on on the weekends and he can make some friends, whether on or off campus. I do expect him to be at our place quite a bit for home-cooked meals. :)

e3opian 12-07-2011 11:11 AM

Had some friends attend but none on campus. They all still had a good experience. Thing with GMU is that it's still "in civilization" with plenty to do off campus. VA Tech, UVA, etc... Not so much.

xthumper32x 12-07-2011 11:21 AM

My fiance is in her senior year there. She lived on campus for the first three. There is a lot of people there on the weekends and there seems to always be something going on either on campus or somewhere in fairfax. He will be fine. Lots to do in the area.

MsPerky 12-07-2011 11:30 AM

That's good to know. Thanks! I already got him tix to Rise Against at the Patriot Center in Feb, so that venue will be convenient for him.

e3opian 12-07-2011 11:35 AM

Rise Against!? Can you adopt me? :o

e3opian 12-07-2011 11:36 AM

Hard to believe the first time I saw them was 10-11 years ago at Nation with Sick of it All.

MsPerky 12-08-2011 02:34 AM

:) I knew nothing about them when he mentioned the concert. I checked them out online and looked at a couple of videos. Not bad. I found that for the most part the members are straight edged. A term I wasn't familiar with, but I like the definition. I'm catching up with the younger generation pretty fast!

9k_on_occasion 12-08-2011 05:33 AM

Lol, bunch of Ian Mackaye wannabes.

MsPerky 12-10-2011 03:34 AM

The +1 and his son are headed to the campus tour today - orientation Mon. Going to be quite a cultural change for him coming from a small town in FL.

MsPerky 12-11-2011 01:40 AM

They were very impressed with the tour.

Welcome to snow.

MsPerky 12-12-2011 06:40 AM

^ Yeah, that too.

MsPerky 12-16-2011 02:55 AM

Well, he got registered for classes after a couple of glitches. He's nervous, but I assume the rest of the students are, too.

He should be eternally grateful he didn't have to suffer through the

^^^ HAHA, I went to JMU for undergrad, but I completely remember the stupid telephone class registration system. It was a PAIN. Luckily we finally switched to on-line by my Junior year.

To MsPerky... good luck to your +1's son! I like the GMU area and your late-teens, early 20s is a good time to be in the DC area especially if you're not commuting to work or buying real estate.

MsPerky 12-16-2011 10:29 AM

They actually fixed a bug with the passwords on the fly as registration was taking place! Then they had him in the system for the Jan orientation so the classes didn't come up as available online for him. They had to go out to the school twice in one day. In my college days, we lined up in the gym or wherever to sign up on paper and hoped by the time we got to the front the class sessions weren't full. :)

MsPerky 01-06-2012 02:32 AM

Well, the +1's son has his dorm assignment, so in a couple of weeks is the move in. He's still enthusiastic. Hope it lasts! :)

TrumpetTitan 01-08-2012 09:50 AM

George Mason class of 2009 checking in. :tipwink:

I had a blast at that school getting a double degree in Math and Music (hence my screenname). I still occasionally drive down to see friends who live nearby or teach there now.

I was lucky to be a freshman playing in the pep band when they made their Final Four run! :)

MsPerky 01-09-2012 02:42 AM

 Glad you enjoyed your experience there. It will be quite a change for the +1's son coming from such a small town in FL. He's been a bit overwhelmed, but I'm sure he'll settle in OK. He is just doing the History major for the first semester, then will get into whether to take on a double major or a minor in Sports Management. Don't want to load him up with too much at the beginning.

MsPerky 01-20-2012 03:10 AM

The +1's son arrived from FL last night to move into the dorm. Classes start Mon. :fingerscrossed:

MsPerky 01-31-2012 02:58 AM

He made it through his first week in pretty good shape. We were worried he wouldn't get up for class, but he managed. He really likes his professors so far and has already made quite a few friends. He said eight of them want to use the other ticket for Rise Against on Feb 5th at the Patriot Center. I got him two tix for his birthday. He's even going in spite of it being the Super Bowl with his team the Giants!

9k_on_occasion 01-31-2012 06:18 AM

Bribery: the best way to make new friends.

MsPerky 02-02-2012 03:04 AM

:)

e3opian 02-06-2012 12:09 PM

So.... how was Rise Against?

MsPerky 02-07-2012 02:48 AM

Haven't talked to him directly, but he told his dad the concert was awesome!! And he had great seats. :)

cap1 02-07-2012 03:05 AM

:hello: good morning all! Been awhile since I was last in here! Looks like a lot has changed (site). Good to see familiar names still posting :)

Ms. Perky, I graduated from GMU about 7 years ago, overall a great experience. Drove through campus a few months ago and they built a lot more dorms, so I'm sure there are more people on campus now over the weekends. I'm glad he's liking it so far.

MsPerky 02-07-2012 03:07 AM

Wow...look who's back! :hello:

The +1's son said they rocked the place. Even he was standing up and singing! Hard to imagine him doing that. :)

EDIT: He's made it through two weeks. A few bumps, but we think he'll do OK. The campus is amazing. So easy to get around and lots to do.

liquidgsr 02-07-2012 03:19 AM

I was there up until 2010. The school was a nice school and I enjoyed it thinking back now. I was a commuter and made some nice friends while learning a thing or two. I studied Accounting and Information Systems Opermation Management there. Great campus, but they harrass the hell out of you once your out. Definately got a lot more expensive and expanded a lot in last couple years. Hope he enjoys it.

Badhabits2k 06-09-2013 10:34 AM

I know several very sexy girls there.. Have him hang with the aoii panda girls! He won't regret it!

MsPerky 10-15-2013 01:35 AM

:bump: Although my bf's son liked GMU, he will be transferring to the U of Memphis for the next semester after four semesters here. His mother lives in Memphis, and I think he likes the idea of a football team. :)

9k_on_occasion 10-15-2013 10:22 AM

Lol, the football club didn't do it for him?

MsPerky 10-15-2013 10:49 AM

Not quite...:) He's really into sports management.
