Air filter replacement at scheduled 30,000 miles
I decided to make this a separate topic.
Has anyone changed their air filter prior to the scheduled 30,000 miles? I have about 800 miles to go to 30,000, and I was shocked to see the condition of my filter. It was so filthy that it should have been changed at 15,000 to 20,000 miles. The filter was caked with dust and dirt between the vanes. The air cleaner element isn't so bad.

Hey Ed. Long time no, er, read
Sorry I can't contribute to your query, as I have already changed my filter twice. Once to JR filter at about 3k, and then to the Mugen (K&N element) after that. I washed the K&N at 15k, but it didn't even look dirty.

Steve,
I probably need to clarify "air filter" and air cleaner" The air filter I'm referring to is the micro filter for inside air, not the engine air intake filter. The air filter is kind of out of sight and out of mind right under the passenger side windshield so I never checked it before now. Shame on me.
Yes, I've been off the web for awhile and probably missed some outings too. Hopefully things will slow down now.

From what I've heard from an awesome mechanic at PFleuger, that filter alone has extended the life of the evaporator cores on many Honda vehicles. It has something to do with our environment here contributing to a lot of A/C problems involving the evaporator core. (My Toyota Cressida had the evap core replaced 3 times in a single year, twice every other year so I ended up dumping it)
I'd opt to replace it around the same mark or 3 years whichever comes first. It's a cheap price to pay to prevent paying more on other stuff.

I examined the filter on both of our cars and they were nowhere as dirty as those in some of the pictures I've seen. I just "tapped" out the leaves and reinstalled them. Maybe ours were cleaner because we never use the "fresh air" setting?

Health389....Thanks for providing that link to everyone.
USDM_S2K....I hope you checked out the link for details about replacing the air filter.
Colin... I try to follow the recomended use of the AC, to use outside air to cool the car initially, then switch to inside air recirculation. About 5 minutes before reaching my destination, I switch back to outside air. This is the procedure recommended by Tony Honda at it car care clinic for new owners.
I hope the word gets out to Hawaii owners to check this filter every 15,000 to 20,000 miles, not every 30,000 as the owners manual recommends. I'm going to pass the recommendation on to Tony Honda Service.
