Default DIY AP2.5 Passenger seat creak fix

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=688365

I had this squeak. It was annoying. Like a creak whenever anyone would sit in the passenger seat and lean forward or backwards.

I know it happens on the MY08-09 and maybe the 06-07 as well. Something to do with the redesign incorporating a weight sensor to disable the passenger airbag.

Some people had it fixed by getting their seat rails replaced.

I played around today and was able to kill the squeak.

I think the solution is very easy... but of course, in finding the easy solution I had to fail at a bunch of things that didn't work.

Let me know if people can confirm this kills the problem. If not, then it was a combination of some of the other stuff I did that solved the issue (and then I'll post the other steps). Otherwise, I don't want to waste people's time with stuff that didn't help.

Step 1. Slide the passenger seat all the way back.
Step 2. Confirm that you have a squeak / creak that happens when you rock back and forth in the seat.
Step 3. Remove the rail cap by pulling the "wings" outwards.

Step 4. That exposes the two silver star-headed bolts on the outside edge of the railing.

I think that it's the plastic-ringed star-bolt that creaks. If you sit in the chair and rock, you can feel it creaking if you put your fingers on those two bolts.

Closer picture:

Step 5. WD-40 with a nozzle tip. I usually put paper towels down before spraying. It didn't take much lube.

Make sure to get the plastic ring around the star bolt. Also the back side of the plate the bolts are attached to.

Step 6. Confirm squeak is gone by rocking in the chair.

Step 7. Rejoice. Buy an s2ki.com membership.

Step 8. Make fun of CKit's salty car.

Here are things that didn't work.
1. Heavy greased the same area first.
2. Also unbolted the seat to get better access to the star bolts.
3. Heavy greased the star bolts on the inner side of the outer rail.
4. WD-40'd other parts of the seat rail.
5. Cursed when the squeak didn't go away.

I think that even though I worked the grease in with gloved fingers, it didn't penetrate deep enough into the plastic ring around the star bolt.

I didn't take it out to see, but if that plastic ring is actually a bushing, it would make sense that it creaks with load (like a plastic gym bag strap). It would also explain why the heavy grease did nothing.

A quick spray of that area with WD-40 got rid of the squeak after all of that.
There is a chance that the combination of the WD-40 and heavy grease would be more effective than WD-40 alone, but we'll see.

This seems as about as annoying as the stupid seat belt head hitting against the door panel.

It did! But it only lasted about 4 months and it was back again.

I was so happy on the drive in today. I kept reaching over and jiggling the passenger seat back to convince myself it was still gone.

Haha it's really sad but I did the same thing. After almost "accepting" it to be part of the car...it's so nice now that it is gone.

Thanks again.

Going to try this ASAP. That squeak has been a thorn in my side since the first day I bought the car. Got my fingers crossed! Thanks for the write-up!

I just noticed a squeak coming from that side of the car last week. I am sure hoping it's this one, and can be fixed this easily. Thanks CKit!
