9650 rpm over-rev
Crap. At autocross today my AP1 got to experience a 2-1 shift near the rev limiter in 2nd. My datalogger showed that it reached 9650 rpm and was over 9000 rpm for about 0.7 seconds. (graph linked below)
How bad is this? Are we talking just replacing the retainers or could it need more work? I plan to do a compression and possibly a leakdown test before taking anything apart.

Before anyone mentions it; this car expressly must be legal for Stock and STR class under SCCA rules, so I absolutely 100% cannot put in the AP2 retainers. Yes, they'd be better but I can't, so tough.
I've actually already got the AP1 retainers and keepers that I bought a couple of years ago for exactly this situation.
Thanks for any advice!

I highle doubt they would EVER check the retainers. even if they did there is no way they could tell the difference. 9650 may not have casued any damage at that short of a period. I would yank the valve cover and check anyway, its not to hard to do.
it's always the luck of the draw in these situations, it is possible that you escaped totally unharmed depending on where the valves/pistons were a the time. The suggestions made above ^ should be followed. And I agree that it would be impossible for anyone to know that you had Ap2 retainers in the engine no matter how hard they inspected the engine , even with the valvecover removed. No one knows these engines that well to detect ap2 retainers by eyeball.
good luck with this.
good luck with this.

Wouldn't the engine have turned 112.58 revolutions in that time, meaning the pistons and valves had been everywhere? Maybe I'm missing something...

It's the principle of the matter. I won't cheat. Then any win is a hollow one, knowing that most of your competition didn't have to cheat to get where they are. There's a lot of honor among the top ranks of autocrossers.
Thanks for the advice from everyone. I'll do a compression and leakdown test first. Hopefully they look ok. If so I'll replace the retainers/keepers just to be safe.

to tell ya the truth, I would doubt that they still sell the failed AP1 retainers anymore. Now what will ya do?
But you can still buy the AP1 retainers and keepers so it's a moot point.
