Default Subwoofers under convertable top!

I've been looking to get a subwoofer installed in cabin. I've sen the custom jobs presented here on the forums, but I just wasn't happy with them (no offense). Me and the installer were going to put a Kicker Solo Baric L7 D4 10" sub behind the driver's seat underneath where the convertable top lays (when down).

You know where the convertable top folds down? That base will be rebuilt using fiberglass, and the sub will be mounted there. To get an idea, the bottom of the sub (the underside) will be near the spare tire (closer to the driver's side). Get it?

Assuming you understand where the sub is going to go, do you guys have any comments or suggestions? Will the convertable top have to be removed to do this? Also, before we begin, is there anything I should look out for.

This can and will be done, I'm just trying to get any heads up info that will be helpful.

Thanks, I'll post pics of the progress when I can.

If I understand you correctly.....you will have the sub located where the stock black top well cover is correct? If so, I would expect major sound "blechs" when the top is down and sitting on the sub's face. BUT, if you work out all the kinks, it might be a very nice solution. Good luck, and keep us posted.

actually -- the spare tire is the passenger side assuming you've got a LHD vehicle like most of us here in the USA.

good idea... like Dave said, when the top goes down, you might find a very muffled sub -- but it can't be much worse than those of us w/ subs in the trunk.

my biggest concern would be clearance, clearance, clearance, and clearance.

there isn't a lot of room back there -- so be sure you've got depth enough, and that when the top goes down that it isn't rubbing anywhere (since it rubbing will potentially damage the top).

this has been done in the past in a few different ways... i look forward to seeing your solution.

you are going to fire your sub directly into you convertable top mechanism. That could be rattle world; plus i've got concerns about over vibrating those delicate pieces.

it could be done, and if you've got a hard top and no soft top, it could be perfect.

It's been done before, without much success.

It has been done with success, by me. Not a 10" but an 8" L7 and it sits more on the passenger side than the driver side. I would take a picture of the setup but I never see the car as I'm always out of town. I was just home too but never had my camera with me.
The sound is slightly muffled with the top down. But, not by much. There are no rattles that the cars don't already have with any sub install.
The sub will need to be mounted under the tray and fire through it or the top wont close. I made my box like normal then but a piece of 1/2" HDF over the whole assembly then fiberglassed it to the bottom of the tray. I had to unzip the window to install.
I also installed an 8" kicker midbass in a sealed enclosure (foam baffle covered in fiberglass) over the gas tank as I like bass in the upper region too.
The amps for both (Memphis 16-MC500D and XTANT 1.1i) even still mounts to the box and the spare tire cover goes over it so the entire setup is stealth with the exception of the low profile grills on the tray and it being carpeted (I might go perf. leather in the future).

I stand corrected, nice to see someone pulled it off with success.

cool. i'd love to see it, if you can, post a few pics. it's always neat to see an innovative set up.

how long have you had your subs in the deck? no problems with the top?

The sub has been installed for about 6 months but due to my limited time home, has been working and playing hard only about 20 to 30 hours so far. I finally finished my system just last week. Before that, I was getting tired of listening to nothing except bass.
The top closes and the tonneau cover goes over. It still plays fine through that also, though muffled.
I'll ask a friend of mine to take some pictures. He's at the NASCAR race taking a long weekend, but when he gets back, hopefully he can take some.
