Default Upgraded to '04 Horns on my '03

No pics, but I wanted to make some notes about the upgrade.

First off, the '00-'01 cars only have one horn. To upgrade to the newer horns, there is wiring involved, this thread is not about that (well this post isn't. If someone else wants to write it up and add it here, feel free.)

In '02 Honda went to a dual horn setup. It sounds a lot like the '00, '01 horn but it is defineatly dual tone. It is pretty weak.

In '04 Honda upgraded to a louder, more robust sounding dual horn setup.

If you want to upgrade your '02-'03 to the newer horns, the install is completely plug and play. There is NO wiring to do. It is just a matter of unbolting the old horns, unplugging them, plugging in the new ones and bolting them in place. This is easier said than done.

One horn is located just in front of the passenger side strut tower under the hood. This is an EASY horn to remove and replace.

The second horn is mounted next to the A/C condensor, just in front of the radiator. There are three basic ways to reach this horn.

1. (And I am telling you this IS the easiest way!!!) Is to remove the front bumper. If you don't know how to remove the front bumper, check out http://www.ricks2k.com and find the instructions for clearing headlights and replacing the diffusers. It details how to remove the bumper. It can be done without jacking up the car.

2. If the car is on jack stands, removing the splash guards under the car will allow access. This is the second easiest way to access the horn.

3. Remove the air shroud in FRONT of the radiator. This is easier said than done. There are three clips that hold down a cover over the A/C condensor for service access. There are four clips across the top of the panel that tie into the radiator support. You unscrew the screw, then pull the clip out. Keep in mind that the screws are PLASTIC, not metal. They are VERY, VERY, VERY easy to strip out, and are a pain to remove. Honestly, that was as far as I could get with it. I couldn't get the thing off, and ended up reverting to option #2 above.

I did some searches, and had trouble finding some of this info so I thought I would start a thread about it. Enjoy.

How much were the upgraded parts? Did you also consider putting in some airhorns instead? I know some people that have done that and they are definitely pretty loud.

Some guests on this board never cease to amaze me with their two cents. Its an easy, inexpensive upgrade and a LOT of owners do it, THAT is why he posted. If you have no intention of doing it, why ask questions, poking at the post, for attention one can only guess? Seems like YOU are the one with too much time on their hands.

I wanted to do this a while back on my 02, and could not find decent info on it. This will help a lot of people out I am sure

Replacement parts were $65 from Hardtopguy: http://www.hardtopguy.com/store/product.ph...4&cat=26&page=1

I was too lazy to go for the air horns, plus I thought they would be TOO loud when locking the car.

BTW -- On my way home from the Dragon, I was almost run off the road by a Ford Explorer. The ONLY thing that saved me was a good honk of my horn. I for one, was VERY glad to have a louder, more aggressive sound at the time.
