Default what is your definition of *poor*?

cut from a Hillary Clinton Blog -
Mr. Bush has actually cut the program that needs to be greatly expanded or millions of poor Americans will be without heat this winter.
I am all for helping actual poor people, but i am now wondering if anyone knows who they really are?

Everyone who has had heating assistance that I have been around (my tenants and friends tenants) have all turned their heat way up and walk around in shorts all winter - it's free, so who cares!!! .

would a poor person drink Heineken? Have bling tones? have a car with a remote starter and start their cars 5-10 minutes before leaving...who the hell wants to get into a cold car? - i could go on forever....

where are the actual poor people who could use the help?

Maybe the true poor are the people with too much pride to take the hand outs / help. I've seen moutain folks and country folks that were very poor but they would be offended by taking tax payers money.

^ i think you are right...the real poor people are too proud to ask for help.

I wonder if any of the candidates have actually looked at the people and visited houses. I love to show them my tenants big screen tv's and recycle bins full of empty booze cans...

This will be locked soon but I think you could call this vote buying.

I'm all for helping people who need help but sometimes tough love is what's needed.

lemme guess, all these people also have kids so they can get rich of welfare, while you slave away 18 hours a day just to have enough food for your kids while you go hungry most days, right?

One thinks that those who piss and whine about the way others live has too much time on their hands and no perspective.

Honestly, you don't know jack if you think everybody who needs public assistance gets it, or even knows how. Sure, there are plenty who milk the system, but what the hell - I pay taxes, and I sure as hell don't think people should be turned down simply because they have poor money management skills - that's part of the reason they need help in the first place.

IMHO, instead of complaining about the poor choices people make, you ought to be talking about people who make good choices. I fail to see what purpose is served by whining about those who have less than you.

FWIW, I live in the top floor of my building, and even with my heat turned off, most days it's too warm, so I always have a window open, even in winter. My heating bill is always low, but anyone just stopping by probably thinks I have the heat cranked and pay through the nose, when the opposite is true. I used to have place that had a very effective furnace, and even though my gf always wanted the heat way too high for me, our bill was quite cheap even with silly high fuel prices.

It's easy to pass judgement on people from the curb, but it's also kind of immature. There is so much you don't know, and besides, it's none of your business. You pay your taxes just like everyone else, but nothing says you have any right to decide where it goes anymore than I do. You don't like how people spend "your" tax dolars? Pretend your money only pays for defense contractors if it makes you feel better.

That comment right there is why America is in trouble.

news flash - America has been "in trouble" since day one.

Given the fact that popular culture is saturated with demands to pay on credit and spend money on useless things like ring tones (or new phones every year coupled with multi-year "plans" featuring onerous cancellation penalties), is it really any surprise people who require financial assistance lack money management skills? Where the hell would they learn it? By listening to conservative talk radio, with the endless stream of idiotic ads for entirely useless gadgets and "buy on credit" spots?

Next I suppose you are going to say America is in trouble because people with criminal records have a tough time getting good jobs and making enough money to keep their family off welfare. Bring on the obvious and irrelevant!

I have lots of 1st hand experience as I have had ~35+ Section 8 tenants through the years. I would have to say that not even 1 of them followed the rules or was truly in need. Every single one had extra people living in the house illegally, almost every one has some crazy cable with a zillion channels, they mostly all drink good beer (no OE1800 here), etc......

So of the people who figured out how to get "into the system" i would say 95% of them should not be there.

If i was offering "li heat" (low income heat) i would stop in and see what the temp is... I do check and it is set at 80F and it is extremely hot in my houses. My furnaces take a beating but hey... it's free to the tenant....

I am all for helping real people in real need, but like I said, my first hand experience is that none of the people really need the free rent, food, etc....

I have one.
a couple of years ago this guy came in with a suspicious looking lesion near his eye. Since it was rather large I recommended a sub-specialist to biopsy it. Since he had no insurance I told him about this low-cost/free clinic that the physician volunteered his time once a month.
when he found out it was the same weekend as a football game he became upset because he had already spent $250 to buy the tickets. I told him the sooner a cancer is treated the better the outcome and he should cancel the game instead of waiting till the next month.
he said bitterly "so, a rich person can be treated any time but a poor guy like me have to wait around for free care huh?" before walking out.
the irony is that the cost of the visit/biopsy at that physician office is roughly $250-300.
I don't know what happened to him.
I think he became scot's tenant.

well, i always thought the people i saw standing on the corner of the busy intersection with a sign: " will work for food" "hungry" "disabled vet" etc etc were the poor people. However, this one guy, i saw pretty much on a daily basis for the last 3 yrs, with duct taped shoes, a messenger bag held together by many safety pins, i thought he was "poor"............i would give him a beverage if i had an extra in my car, or sometimes a few bucks,.........until i saw him at the local casino walking around sticking quarters in. did he get that way from gambling? or was he just hoping to make some money easy??? well needless to say, i dont give him any money now.
I think the definition of poor depends on what is being talked about at the time, or the given situation. I consider myself "poor" at times cuz i cant afford the Mugen top, or some other part for the S. i will always say "i cant buy that, im poor"
Poor relates to the context in which its being compared. We here are almost all "poor" next to,...Bill Gates, but poor next to the person who hasnt had a shower in months, no.
