I wonder how they can charge tax on somehting that's "free"?

Also, there's no idication of which Chevy you get for free - I wonder if it's all their left over Cavaliers?

Last year the local dealer was giving away a cavalier with every corvette purchase...

Some how I don't think you can buy a base Cavalier and get a Corvette for free.
But that sure would be nice.

Last year around where I live a Lincoln/Mercury dealership had a sale buy a Lincoln Blackwood, get a Mercury Cougar free... Or maybe it was the year before, either way, they don't make the Blackwood anymore because it didn't sell...and that sale just goes to show how badly they were trying to dump them.

Maybe in some states you are required to pay tax on the book value of the vehicle?

^ no you pay it on true cost of the car to the dealer from the factory.

A local (Minnesota) Honda dealership was having a "buy 2 get 1 free" sale, the Kia dealership was giving away a Rio with every minivan purchase.
