Drew, Martin and John's great adventure

Big Sur 4/08/2002

Here's our story (And here are the pics )

Drew (E Ticket) met up at my house in Pleasanton at 8:30, with me and my Brother-in-law Martin who was visiting from Brampton (near Toronto). At 8:50 we got on the road after
gassing up and getting batteries for the radios and went down First to 680. (thought we might see you Aimee).

We took 680 S and encountered a lot of traffic at 84 so we circled back and went Calavares way down to 680. Martin's eyes went wide at the scenery and windies. Weirdest
thing... about 5 miles into Calavares there's a homeless guy sitting on the side of the road talking to himself. We figure he must have walked in there. Can't figure out
where he might have been going.

Our pace was spirited but not too crazy. Seems now that it should have been our first choice route.

We rejoined 680 and carried on to hwy 17. Driving though Los Gatos were we saw our only other S2000 (Yellow top down and boot on) going the other way on 17. Then over the Mtn
to Santa Cruz. Got a little rain on the windscreen but not enough to force the tops up. We would have waved to you Scott's Valley guys but it was about 10 and you were
probably still in bed.

In Santa Cruz we turned south on hwy 1 to Monterey and then though Monterey to 17 mile drive. With all the detours in Monterey that turned out to be a real pain but with
better planning it could have fit in better.

We went along 17 mile to Pebble Beach golf course where we stopped to stretch our legs, go into the realtor and feign interest in a 5 million dollar house and then went to buy
some Pebble Beach trinkets. Took some photos over the ocean and then zipped down to the Lone Cypress for more photos.

Next we headed for a drive by Carmel beach and then back out to hwy 1 heading south. A quick stop for lunch and then on to Big Sur! Un-friggin-believable!

I've lived in the area for 5 years and have never driven hwy 1 south of Carmel before. This is a trip that truly lives up to its reputation. When we came around a curve to
see Bixby Bridge I immediately braked and pulled over for some photos and ooohs and aaahs. We jumped in the cars again and continued on to Julia Pfeiffer park which was our
planned turnaround spot. I had heard of a waterfall that falls into the ocean and thought that sounded cool. Well it was. The park is about 15 miles south of Bug Sur;
admission is free and the falls are just a short walk from parking. More photos and then back in the car.

It was time to head home. Back up to Monterey but it wasn't quite as spirited as the way in. A few slow pokes about 6 or 7 cars up wouldn't pull over. (On the way south the
slow drivers were great for the most part, pulling over as we approached from behind.) This is where we encountered "Otto" the school bus driver. This crazy guy pulled out to
overtake on two separate occasions!! No kids in the bus but it was downright impressive. On the second occasion my radio crackled but I couldn't make out what Drew was
saying. I'm asked him to repeat and heard him shout, "That bus driver has got BALLS!".

This time we went from Monterey out 68 to Salinas paying homage to the Temple of Laguna Seca from our cars as we drove by... no time to stop this time. Traffic was back all
the way from Carmel to Salinas but then we turned north on 101 and got some relief.

Driving up to hwy 156 we then headed east to San Juan Bautista, Hollister then through the Pacheco Pass. We went by San Luis Lake and then out to hwy 5. We'd had some great
twisties and now we got some speed. That hwy is nuts.

Interesting side note... we stopped for gas and found out the guy working there lives (yes, present tense) 2300 miles away... in Brampton... about a mile away from Martin!
Weird. Small world.

We got our cars all covered with bugs on hwy 5 as it approached dusk we turned east on hwy 580 past the Altamont speedway (is that a 1/4 mile dirt track?). We climbed the
Altamont Pass and could see Pleasanton again after 11 hours. We got home at 8pm.

What a blast. What a day. It *was* a pretty spirited 375 miles and I was ready for a beer. Wish you were there!

Thanks again Drew for joining us and having so much fun. (great photos too)

That looked like a great time!

Any one know how to strap in a camera for solo drives (without a co-pilot for picture-taking)? I'm on my own for about another month, but would love to share some pics of my S2000 in Hong Kong. The roads can be pretty twisty here, but much narrower (don't want to crash for the sake of picture taking!).

Archie,

MG racing (See our sponsors' page) has come out with a camera mount.
Also see this thread. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...?threadid=56053

I don't see why you couldn't mount a regular camera there. I don't know if you can do this with a digital camera but if you
mount a 35mm camera in the mount you can buy a cable that attaches to the camera so that you can press to take the picture.

I'm not sure if you have that option with a digital.

I would do a search first to see if anyone has posted camera mounting instructions.

If that does not come up with anything I would post your question in S2000 talk.

Good luck, looking forward to the pictures.

Thanks guys. The photographers in my link were me and Martin but mostly Martin. I did a bunch of the stills.

Dig cameras normally don't have a cable attachment but some (like my Olympus 3ooo series) have a remote. that would work. Most dig cameras DO have a tripod mount on the bottom so any camera mount will work.

The "next 74 miles sign"... great Q. Martin spotted it on the way down to Big Sur. It's JUST south of Carmel on hwy 1. I NEEDED to stop for a photo opp on the way home. I love it too.

:big silly grin:

Just getting caught up with the posts, thanks to Scott's "bug" thread that pointed me here. Great story and great pictures.
But I gotta ask: Is it LEGAL to take pictures of the lone cypress? I thought it is a copyrighted image and it is against the law to take pictures of it. Anyone know what the current story is?
