4th Gear Pop Out
My S2K popped out of 3rd the other day for the first time. Before this incident, I didn't even think that it was possible to pop out of gear w/o engaging the clutch. I did it on purpose to see make sure it wasn't a mistake on my part, and it popped out of 4th, too. I'm assuming that it's easy to pop out of any gear in this car, but it's only happened to me in 3rd and 4th. Are there any negatives of having the car pop out of a gear? I figured it might help with revmatching to say the least . . .
On my first S2000 it happened quite frequently. Most of the time when the transmission was cold (the first 15KM of a drive). Dealer looked at it and stiffened the rubbers and it was a bit better, but it still happened occasionally. My new S2000 doesn't have this problem.

NEVER NEVER NEVER hold your hand on the stick while driving. The stick needs a bit of movement while driving, if you hold it, you're going wreck the gears. It's one of the first things what they teach at driving school here in Europe. But then again we have almost no automatics, we're used to manual transmission.

I also think you are over-reacting to a comment by your driving instructor. Yes, it can be damaging is you use a shifter as a support or place a load on it, but there will be no affect from resting your hand on it, which is quite natural when driving in traffic and shifting often.

Popping out of 2nd on early 91 and 92 NSXs is a sign of impending snap ring gear failure. http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Troubleshootin...ransmission.htm
On my race car, it sometimes pops out of 4th when accelerating around a corner. Very intermittent, possibly due to a loose transmission mount we haven't debugged yet. May be something else entirely. Like Chris, putting a hand on the shifter prevents it.
As far as my S2000, I've never experience it and have no idea what it could be.

Marvin,
I have had the same 4th gear pop-out problem since I received the car in December, 2000 w/ 12 miles on the odometer. It was happening infrequently and I couldn't pin down a common cause. When the vehicle was serviced (6K miles) I had the dealer check the problem, they couldn't replicate it. However, they did change the transmission fluid and suggested once the transmission was broken-in the problem might go away. The mechanic (who did a test drive with me trying to replicate the problem) thought it was related to syncromesh gearing teeth (or similar) made of some softer metal that is designed to "break-in". Sounded good to me? He also stated that he wanted to avoid "cracking open" the transmission if at all possible.
Well I'm at 9.9K miles and the problem is getting worse. I'm going to have it serviced again soon and hopefully have them fix the problem.
I'm hoping somebody out there has already had this problem fixed and knows the solution?

Mine pops out of 4th gear only when the surface is bumpy, and when the tranny is cold ..... when it gets warm, it has not pop out of the gear yet. The car is only 3 days old, and I have to bring it in tomorrow morning for check up, I'll post the updates as soon as I hear from them .....
