My goal was to build a hoist for the top that could be operated by one person, cause little or no damage to the rubber seals, use minimum vertical space, and not swivel around freely once hoisted. The design consists of a 2x4 boom running fore and aft with a rope bridle on each end. The forward bridle attaches to the underside of each built-in latch with small brass yachting shackles. The aft bridle attaches to the S-shaped rear guides with rope loops. I used bowline knots to keep the loop from closing. Also, I reinforced the rope loops with 1 foot lengths of the outer cover from rope one size larger. The sheet metal S-shaped rear guides are pretty sharp. Wouldn

 

Very nice work, especially with the pulley system. You only have to lift half the weight. Have you seen my contraption posted a few months ago? I used "grappling type hooks on the back that don't touch the seals, but I think yours will be OK.

 

Thanks xviper. I did look at your design and considered copying your approach.

I got a pulley system from a friend's Mercedes and tried that. It worked but the straps would have ruined the rubber seals by the windows.

As for the weight, the top is still pretty heavy and get care needs to be taken in lifting and lowering it.

Have you considered using one of those special self locking blocks which prevent the object from falling if the rope slips out of your hand?

 

Thanks for the idea. I have not lowered the hoist since I built it. I'll probably add your idea to it in October when the hardtop goes back on the car.

Hey guys.. look what I found. I'm not sure if this has already been posted, but heres a picture of a top hoist for miatas, im not sure if it'll work with the s2k, but I'm sure something can be done.
