Default L.S.D. Applications

In the Helms manual our L.S.D. is defined as "Torsen" and it only has gears without clutch plates.
Aftermarket L.S.D.'s mention clutches and 1.5 or full 2 way operation.
What are the differences in function and characteristics between these models?

Hey guys-

About the LSD (drug)- Ask Jack Nicholson... he'll be one to tell ya!

About the LSD (car part)-

1.0 way- works only in acceleration.

1.5 way- works in acceleration and neutral speed (not accelerating/decelerating).

2.0 way- works all the time (acceleration, braking, and when maintaining speed).

Clutchpacks need rebuilding- depends on what brand you get.

Torsens do not- but they usually cannot be "tuned" to kick in like clutchpacks which can be tuned with different clutch discs.

Hope that helps!

I'm running the stock slip differential and havn't found a need to upgrade. I was looking at Mugen, Spoon and Toda's sites and keep seeing these LSD's, just wondered what changes 1.5 and 2 way make to the car. I think I'd have to corner a car with 2 way installed to feel the difference at various points in the apex.

Here is good background on LSD's:

http://www.club4ag.com/faq%20and%20tech_pa...rential_101.htm

GTR,

I believe that a 1.5 way offers a higher percentage of lock on acceleration than deceleration, but it still offers lock on deceleration to some degree, whereas a 2 way offers the same lock percentage both in acceleration and deceleration.

The reason one would go with a 1.5 way over a 2 way is that the 1.5 is easier to drive under wet/snowy/slippery conditions.

The 2 way is more fun on a dry road.

S2KRob,
THANKS! That was a very informative thread.
They seem to stop just short though, telling us who manufactures most of the aftermarket LSD's which have too small of clutches, wear fast and are unpredictable, but don't tell us who builds the proper application from scratch.
In theory and built properly, the LSD could take cornering to the next level.

Kaaz, for one makes an awesome LSD. The Reverend has it in his S2000 and couldn't believe the difference it made from the stock Torsen. He said the handling was sensational. He got the 1.5 I believe.
