Default My car is ill!

I have noticed that once I hit VTEC (6k) the car is hesitating through 6.5k to 8k, and it feels as if there are lots of flat spots where the VTEC stops working and then starts again. It seems quite intermitent although for the last 3 miles of driving home it happened everytimr I go into VTEC

Anyone have any idea what this could be? I am going to check oil etc and give it another run in a couple of hours, thought I would ask you guys b4 trying to replicate the problem with the dealer.

Oil level is the obvious (and easy) first thing to check. Beyond that.....faulty VTEC solenoid????? (I'm stabbing wildly in the dark here!!) Whatever, good luck and let us know what transpires.

Hesitation in vtec is most often caused by the map sensor. Hit it a few times with a screwdriver handle, or rubber mallet if you have one.

Its definatley your MAP sensor.

Open the bonnet, come forward from the red Vtec cover where just to the right is what I think is the exhaust manifold. there is a small square thing about the size of a matchbox on top of the manifold. It should have a blue sticker on it and the word MAP should be on it somewhere.

Disconnect it, unscrew it and take it off. Tap it sharply with the plastic handle of a screwdriver and pop it back in.

Sounds scary but is the easiest fix I've ever done !

If you still can't find it, do a search on MAP sensor..that's how I found out about it.

Gave the MAF a good old tap this morning and my illness is cured!

Now there is no hesitation in VTEC!!! I have also noticed that it has also cured the kangarooing that I was experiencing when driving in traffic at low speed so that is a real bonus, thanks for the help

One thing though.... I did manage to destroy one of the two screws that hold the MAF in place When unscrewing it I used the wrong screw driver and the screw head was so soft, i wrecked it What is the best way of getting the screw out now? I will get a new screw, but not sure how to get it out

Glad it worked

Er..on the screw part..I don't have an easy answer.

If it was me, I'd order a new screw from Honda, screw the sensor down tightly and get the local (cheap) back street garage to do it while you stand over him.

They only secure it to the manifold anway so it should be ok for a while.

If you're feeling brave you can drill it out - but only if you know what you're doing.
Can you grip the head with a pair of pliers or mole grips?
Otherwise any backstreet garage will charge you next to nowt to get it out (probably the best option).
