Default What's best for removing windsheild tape glue?

I just did it! I removed the windshield tape from my '02 GPW. I think it looks much sportier, which I like. Anyway, I don't think that I'll have any horror stories regarding the paint under there, but I can't see it all, yet. That's because there is a lot of glue still on the windshield frame. The side pieces went well, but the top piece left almost all of the glue. What did you use to remove any leftover glue from your car? I've read bug/tar remover, goo gone, glass cleaner. I tried the glass cleaner, but it didn't work. Then I tried Maguire's cleaner wax. That didn't work either. Somebody at a shop told me (before I removed the tape) that RainX works well, but I was afraid to try it on something other that glass. So, I just bought some Maguire's paint cleaner. I haven't tried it, yet, however. I wanted to ask your opinion first. For those of you that used bug/tar remover, what brand did you use? Is goo gone safe for auto paint?

thanks,
gil

3M's weatherstrip adhesive remover works well on this kind of stuff-expensive though. I found some at a NAPA store.

BTW : It also works on tar and asphalt.

I just did mine(GPW!) today also. I did find two spots with some swirled scratches that look as if someone sanded it down with 100 grit and removed some clearcoat. I must say that I'm still happy with the removal, as skeptical as I was beforehand.

Man! What a pain in the butt. I just finished (at least for now) removing the glue w/ way too many applications of Goo Gone and Maguire's paint cleaner. Before that, I tried some different oils (no baby oil in the house). The worst part was trying to get the little glue balls (left by the Goo Gone) left under the rubber molding between the windshield frame and the windshield. I used a toothpick to get most of them out. I hope I didn't stretch out that rubber molding too much. Anyway, I'm glad that it seems to be over. At least I didn't notice any bad paint areas, like some of the other tape removers did.

Thanks for the advice,
gil

Sweet!

I must say it can be a bitch of a job but fortunately it's not complicated and the screw-up factor is minimal. It's just a lot of elbow grease. I think the cases where the paint wasn't in good shape are few. < 1% for sure.

You guys using any petroleum based product to remove the glue, be careful you don't get it on any rubber parts or it will deteriorate and crumble after time.

Now, that is a really interesting suggestion. Let's not forget that this car is a real babe magnet, and it will only take a small part of that bottle of baby oil to remove the tape. You'll meed to figure out an appropriate way to use the remainder of that baby oil on the attracted 'babe' of your choice!

Hmmm..I'm considering the removal of the infamous windsheild tape. Does baby oil work for sure? Any testimonials?
