Default Driving in a Winter Wonderland (sung to the tune of.....)

So, you put your car away for the winter? Don't drive it when it rains? THIS is S2000 country..........

Well ........... It's my S2000's country.
Sorry, I didn't have my camera with me this morning when I got off my night shift and had 10 inches of snow piled on the car. Temp was about -10*C (+14*F for the rest of you). Didn't plug it in overnite 'cause this is warm considering what's coming in 2 days (-20*C, -4*F). After I cleared the snow off it fired up on the first crank in a heart beat. Started throwing out heat in the interior after about 3 minutes. Snow tires on all 4 corners. Around here, 99% of all vehicles (including SUVs) run only all-season radials. Unless they have dedicated snow tires, I can outrun anybody across an intersection and by the time the next guy gets to the end of the intersection, I'm about a half block away. This thing is so well balanced that winter driving is a lot of fun. In fact, I think I have more fun in this car in winter than I do in summer. You should see the look on peoples' faces when they see how much get up and go this car has on snow filled streets. Drifting around corners is great fun and very controllable. And the twin rooster tails shooting out the back? YeeeeeHawwww!
If I had the time, I'd consider snow rallying this thing.

just remember, gettin' goin' is easy, stopping isn't! I live in a ski town and watch many accidents all winter long - mostly by people in rented suvs who, since they can accelerate fast, figure they have more control than the others on the road... that is until they hit the brakes...

due to the number of rented suvs on the road here, my vechile of choice for the winter is my GMC2500, weighted down and with an 8 foot commercial-grade plow. This way I'm one of the biggest things on the road (and the acceleration with 4 studded snows and a 454 doesn't suck either!)

enjoy winter driving! I imagine donuts in an empty parking lot are a riot. And learning how to steer when the rear end lets go... priceless!

GREAT PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes me jealous. We hardly have any snow right now. I did bicycle in sleet and rain this morning. We're supposed to get some white stuff this afternoon and tonight.

Just be careful, xviper. Those SUV drivers sometimes think they can stop a 5,000 lb vehicle as well in winter as in summer.

Barry WY - no snow yet up there? I'm sick of it already "down here in CO. Where is Sheridan?

XVIPER - saw in another post I may have "Small man's syndrome?!"

Actually, I own a truck since I always own two houses - live in one, building one, and shovelling or snowblowing...well, blows!

The look of someone sliding out of control toward the big yellow plow is priceless - fortunately I have been able to get out of the way so far -- an Acura owes me bigtime!

Sheridan is 130 miles north of Casper and 130 miles south of Billings, just east of the Big Horns.

It first snowed here 6 September. When my son and I went hiking in the Cloud Peak Wilderness 8 September to 11 September, we trapsed through a foot of snow and blizzard conditions. Then, on 11 September, it was sunny and clear as we fished for cuts in a high mountain lake, unaware of the rest of the world.

I put my snow tires on my S2000 and on my Prelude on 1 November. I'll leave them on until mid April. However, we've had a warm October and November. It has snowed a couple more times since 6 September, but melted off.

I think winter is coming for keeps today.

Xviper,

What kind of camera did you use? It made your silverstone S2000 look like it's... gray.. a muddy gray color... almost like the muddy color of the Audi TT... hehe.

Have fun driving in the snow! I'm in upstate NY and so far ... no snow.

Don't be offended. I've owned SUVs, too. I felt invincible.
As for not being able to stop, you're right, partially. Like I said earlier, most modern day SUVs run all-season radials. They should actually be called 3 season radials. They don't stop worth sh$t. I have 4 dedicated snow tires and along with the car's ABS, the S2000 stops extremely well. Oh yeah, I consider myself a defensive and aware driver, especially in winter conditions. This is my second winter with the car. Last winter, the car was new and I was getting to know its winter handling traits. I think I know the car's abilities and limits in winter quite well. We can't all drive tanks and snowplows nor would many of us want to.

XViper.....welcome to yet another winter. Have fun driving the S2000, and pehaps you can take me for a "spin" on Tuesday

As for the "muddy" colour referred to earlier, I wouldn't be surprised if the car is indeed muddy. The roads here in Calgary get very very muddy during heavy snowfalls, coupled with the salt/sand added to streets by the City to enhance traction.

PS-My SUV only weights 3800LBS...
