DJ Qube's LED Dash - Progress Update! (05-16-04)
First off,
The dash solution is just around the corner. I have been trying to find the best way to make this an easy core exchange that does NOT require any soldering, any exotic tools, extreme mechanical or electrical skill, or more major costs to myself. I have had to track down and order several parts that are not normally stocked at dealerships, visit several salvage yards, etc., while starting a new job and continuing to crank out Audio Controls at the same time.
1) Modified Audio Controls and Climate Controls
2) Modified Engine Start button, Hazard Switch, Roof Switch, Cruise Control, and Defroster Switch (02+).
3) Laser cut diffuser panel
4) LED Board
5) Modified Gauge Housing
6) Color Filters
7) Miscellaneous parts to make the install easier
The things I'm still working on are....
1) Documentation of the install
2) Trying to squeeze out a bit more brightness by playing with the circuit and with different opacities of the diffuser plate.

Okay, here's the latest...
BLUE or WHITE DASH - The blue and white solution is FINISHED. Even more finished than before, actually!
In order to get the highest possible output, I had to redesign the circuit board, which caused quite a bit of unplanned work and delay. I now have a version 2.00 board that will be used for the white or blue dashes. I've been running this in my car for 2 weeks now to test overheating, brightness during peak daylight hours with superdark sunglasses on, etc., and everything is working out great.
RED DASH - The red was surprisingly more difficult to see than the blue during peak daylight hours while wearing dark sunglasses. Although still very useable as is, I think the red could be better. I am testing going with a red LED, which offers higher brightness, but cannot be used in conjunction with a blue filter to make a blue dash. This sacrifice in versatility should result in the more brightness for the red, but I will need to test. I don't want this to hold production back, so I will release the blue dash solution before I work on the red solution. The red dash may also be slightly less expensive because RED LEDs are cheaper than WHITE ones.
QUESTIONS....
The board I have been working on is of course NOT immediately compatible with '04+, but, assuming all goes well with the '00-'03 board, I will be making an '04 solution sometime in the future.
