Just in case the handbrake fails. I lived in San Francisco and it became a habit with all the hills.

Always! Here's one reason why:

It's good practice, it's a precautionary thing.
If you do it all the time, it becomes habit and no ill should come of it.

Living in LA, I didn't use to have this habit. After my car slided out of the parking space and block the driveway, I always put my car in gear when park on a slope of any kind

always in gear. only takes one time watching your car start rollling on a hill to realise why it makes sense.

Roads around here are quite flat and I rarely need to use it ... Can't imagine San Francisco though, that's where you need to put it into gear nevertheless just in case. Another reason is because I've got a timer and remote start going to shut down and start up the car so if I engage into gear, the timer goes dead ... Theft and general safety precaution.

I have made it a habit to always do both..handbrake and 1st. Never had any problems.
