Unhappy what is the CKP sensor's function?

the other day I was getting off the exit ramp and I downshifted to third and the vsa! alert & cel popped on...I pulled off to the side and shut the car down because it started bucking....so I started it again and it didn't sound like it wanted to at all and then it popped on w/ both alerts still lit up....the owners manual doesn't really say sh!t about the vsa in it other than it's function, but not much on any errors.....unless you count this as help "if the light stays on, it has malfunctioned and you must take the vehicle to the dealership for service" (thanks).......so I did and they said it was the CKP sensor behind the timing chain (I think that was the location)...any info on the CKP, what it does, and how it could have malfuntioned?

CKP= Crankshaft position sensor.

Provides an input signal for the PCM to determine fuel injection timing for each cylinder, it's also the RPM input signal, and for misfire detection.

CKP sensor intermittent interruption. As yours is an 06 and presumably under warranty, they'll likely just put a new Crank Position Sensor into it.

that much I know, because you are correct in what they are doing...but I'm still trying to figure out what happened, they couldn't explain it.
