Default ac comes on when in defrost mode. feature or glitch?

ok. winter has arrived in so cal. top up. windows fog up. defroster on. but wtf. i rotate the climate control knob to one of the two far right (cw) positions (defrost mode) and the ac comes on. wtf. as long as i'm in defrost mode, i can't turn ac off. other settings, ac goes off ok. is this a feature or a my2003 glitch?

It's a feature. The a/c dehumidifies the air and hence makes the fog go away faster.

I usually let the defog and then keep it in defrost heat mode and push the a/c button to turn the a/c part off.

Maybe that is an 03 thing then? My 01 goes off when I turn it to defrost and it automatically comes on. I just push a/c and it goes off. Interesting.

Its not a defect...just a function built into the car.
Running the AC de-humidifies the air that comes into the cabin, which helps the defrosting process.

Try this,

To deactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob to panel only setting (next to max a/c).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops flashing.

To reactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob all the way to the right (defrost position).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops flashing.
7) After the 7 seconds described in step 6, the recirculation button will start to flash. Continue to hold the button for another 7 seconds. After this, the a/c light will turn to green and it's finished!

Although this write up is based on a Honda CRV it also works for the S2000. I've done it twice so far. If you in any case dis-connect your battery terminal, you'll have to go through the process again.

np....I was wondering the same thing not too long ago.
However, once you do disable the AC, you'll know why it comes on in the first place.
It takes that much longer for the windows to de-fog without the AC running.

It's something that comes on 02 and 03's but once I put my stand alone in the a/c did not come on automatically when I put on the defrost only when I pushed the button (a/c) to activate! ~nate

sebrings-- that's some excellent inside info bro. I'm gonna have to try that-- the automatic AC thing bugged me.

u have a good point about it taking longer to defrost, but I think it's worth it in light of the extra load the AC puts on the motor.

thx for the info.
