Default How to completely gut-out your stock airbox intake

I have read many threads about people asking how to gut-out their stock airbox and improving air flow into the filter, and also responded to those questions. However, I haven't seen a "How to..." topic made about this mod with pictures provided, so here it is for all of you who are interested in this easy mod.

Tools needed:

1. Flat head screwdriver
2. Duct tape or heavy-duty tape
3. Scissor or pliers

Step 1.
Unclip the retainers(6) from the airbox and remove the cover. The under side of the cover should look like this.

Step 2.
Take the screwdriver and ply the air hose apart from the cover. There are 4 plastic thingy holding it to the cover. It should come out easily. There's also a "mini-wall" next to the air hose, you can cut that out as well.

Step 3.
There's a plastic "wall" right in front of the air filter. Cut that out completely. *Note:* if you want, remove the air filter to get more room in the airbox before cutting. Instructions to remove the air filter can be found here. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=379119

Step 4.
When you lift up the air filter, there's a rectangle hole at the top corner. You can use duct tape to cover it.

Step 5.
Use a vacuum to take out all the dirt/rocks/whatever else got sucked into your airbox. Take this opportunity to clean your airbox as well. Then put the cover back on, clip the 6 retainers back, and YOU'RE DONE!

Thanks for taking the time to do a write-up. I see alot of questions about this too!

Personally.....
I removed my airbox from the car to give myself some more room to operate....

Notice any difference in sound with thisa mod? If so, can you describe it and how loud compared to a CAI? I have been considering this mod for sound purposes only as I am skeptical on how much gains it will give if any. I would have bought another Comptech intake like I had on my first S, but I plan on going FI at some point so it isn't worth it just for a few months. Nice write up

have read many threads about people asking how to gut-out their stock airbox and improving air flow into the filter,
Honda designed the airbox for a 2.0 (or 2.2) that revs up to 9000 rpm (or 8000).
No offence, you think you can improve it?
Send your foto's to Honda.
They may learn something
All their airbox aerodynamics is worthless now.

If sound is all you're after then

Btw.. what engine oil are you using?
Dino 10W-30?
Why?
Because Honda recommends it?
Why?

Most people doesn't notice any changes or don't feel any difference, but on my S, the sound does change a bit. At idle, you won't notice much, but at WOT, the sound does improve/louder and the throttle is more "free flow". It won't sounds as loud as CAI, but it's a free mod so I'm not complaining.

I wanted to go SC too at some point, but I'm a poor college student and won't be able to afford that for a couple months. I'd settle with this for now.

Well, I'm not an engineering person or anything, so I won't question what Honda did. I'm sure that what did was great, however, if I feel like I can improve something that they've done, hey why not? Couldn't hurt.

umm im pretty sure u get more air.. and reason why honda and most car companys make it restrictive is cuz of sound.. why dont they just install a cai and more flowing exhaust.. cuz sound would be to loud and cant sell it that why.. duh.. why buy muffler/ exhaust systems that have mufflers when all they do is muffle the sound and restrict.. best set up would be take the back half /where the mufflers at.. unbolt it and havea muffler shop run pipes all the way to the rear.. and whats backpressure when your wot.. u dont need it.. and under 4k revs its no louder than an aftermarket mufflerexhaust system imo..

Why oh why would anyone do this?.... Just get a CAI and be done with it. Why cut/dremel "rice" out your stock components and think you've actually modded something?

JMO....
