It depends on what you're looking for. Rear speakers will not give you really hard bass like a sub, but a powerful set of shakers can give you the feel of one. I have a single low-power set in the back of the seats, but I would like to get a second set for under the seat. In my opinion, they ARE worth it, especially for $30.

That's what they are designed to do, shake, not produce sound. Low frequency sound is more readily felt as opposed to heard (particularly sub-sonic sounds below 20 Hz...even though our CD players don't support them), but this works reasonably well at higher frequencies around the 20-60 Hz range.

You get the benefit of feeling strong bass without the hearing loss associated with bass speakers. From that standpoint, it depends highly on how they are installed. Some have attached them to the floor of the car, but that is no where near the ideal location since the frame is really stiff. The best place would be under the seat and attached to the seat itself. This gives you the best and most direct conduction path between the shakers and your butt other than directly taping them inside your Levis. Install them carefully, power them well, and you'll really enjoy them.

Actually, if anyone finds a new supply of the cheap units, I'd like to pick up another pair. Parts Express stopped selling them a year or so ago, and I haven't come across a good supplier since.

I have lucid's rear speakers but want little more bass. I was thinking of adding bass shakers since I dont' want to sacrifice any trunk space. do you think it will help? Will I need an amp to drive the shakers?
