Hey guys/gals-

Okay, here's the problem... Gloria has just under 1000 miles on her. I did not VTEC until 600 miles and have checked the oil at each fill up as well as take very good care of her. Tonight for the first time I was at a four way intersection with Stop signs. There was no one around and I wanted to see what VTEC would be like starting from the line. So, I reved it to about 7,000 RPM and went to drop the clutch. The revs jumped to around 8500!!! The car wasn't going anywhere then she started moving but slowly. Almost like when your wheels spin and your just not going far. My next instinct was to throw her in second. I did and the revs stayed at 6000+ but I was still moving very slowly. Suddenly I pulled away and the car seemed to get back to normal. When I got home it smelled very bad like something was Burning?! I opened the hood and I could feel alot of heat coming from the engine and the burning smell seemed very noticeable from the where the oil cap is. So, WHY did my car not move when I did this, almost like a clutch slipping, and why does it smell like this??? Please, don't tell me I killed my baby!!! What's wrong....Please guys/gals what happened?????????????

I'm pretty sure it WAS the clutch slipping. Which it will do if you dont get off the clutch quick enough,

Sounds to me like you spun the clutch. That means that the discs rubbed against one another instead of grabbing and going.

Your car will be OK, but next time you do this sort of nefarious behavior (......) try this...(not that I am suggesting that you kids at home do this)...

Put the tip toe on the very bottom of the clutch pedal...rev to whatever range you want to drop it at, and then slip your little baby feets off clutch pedal and BLAMMO...! You're off and running...

What you thought was wheelspin was actually clutch spin...you need to make sure to let the clutch out F A S T...feathering it will spin it and create that nasty stench you referred to.

Yeah, I recently did that too! Except I redlined it, probably to about 9,400 rpm's, with the clutch slipping!
Only had about 950 mi. on it! Awful clutch burn smell!
Probably lost about 10k mi of life on my clutch!
Learn from experiences!!!

Man, I love you guys!! You are so quick to answer questions and that's one of the reasons I'm such a dedicated member of this board. Wheeeew, thanks, so glad to know that nothing major is wrong. I have experience driving sports cars (many in fact)just never one's that I had to rev sooo high to get off the line fast. I am very careful by the way where and when I drive "spiritedly". This is why I chose this dead intersection. I'll take your advices next time. BTW, I think I'll wait a little while before I experiment like this again. Thanks guys!!!!!!!
