Default Fog Light Switch on Jap Imports: Solution

My S2000 (Jap Import) had an aftermarket fog light switch. This looks awful when compared to the Honda fog light switch.
The Honda fog light switch is push once to turn on, then push again to turn off. It works by dropping a low signal to the ECU which in turn operates the fog light relay.
To replicate this with a genuine Honda fog light switch I bought a Multi Func Relay Sw from www.maplin.co.uk at

I was under the impression that the Rear Fog Light ECU was in the dashboard and that it just need to be connected up.

My Dealer said they could see the ECU in the dash but were not allowed to connect it up.

I managed to get the wiring diagram and a Honda switch but have not got around to giving it to an Auto-Electrican yet.

What made you decide to go down the route of the Maplins relay??

Two things.
1) I can't see the ECU.
2) Does the Jap ECU have the same circuitry inside for the Fog light? It probably does but not sure. At least this route I don't have to buy a new ECU if I screw it up!

I haven't actually looked for the ECU.

I bought the S2000 rear fog light and switch from a scrap yard and asked my local dealer to fit them so I could SVA the car.

I got a phonecall about 2 hours later saying that they had fitted the fog light but were not willing to fit the switch as they could not guarantee that the rear fog light ECU they could see would work with a UK switch.

I tried to point out that the ECU must be the same as the UK one as they don't have Rear fog lights in Japan but they still wouldn't do it.

I have managed to get the wiring diagram from Honda, if you want me to fax it to you.

1) I'm afraid I can't help with locating the ECU, as I said I haven't even seen it.
2) logically, I would say it must be the same, due to not needing a rear fog light in Japan

Fog lights work on a UK car using a JDM ECU. So it's not the ECU. (Though the ECU's are different - JDM ECU's have no immobiliser for starters.).

A mis-understanding here I think.

There is a seperate ECU for the rear fog light that is concealed in the dashboard. Basically it is a relay due to the switch just been a push switch.

This is the ECU you would not think was in the JDM car (due to not having a rear fog light) but my dealer swears it is.

Hi

I am in the process of importing an S from Japan. The fog light switch wasn't something I had condisered until I stumbled across this posting. My questions are, what is the best way of sorting this out to ensure I have a honda switch? Is it best to source the parts myself and get an auto-sparky to fit? or will any Honda garages sort the whole thing for me? Will the garages who perform the SVA mods be able to fit a genuine Honda switch?

Any replies appreciated

cheers

Alistair

p.s S should arrive in 4 weeks, can't wait!
