Default X-country freight costs for a car?

Anyone have an idea what it would cost? Has anyone done this before? Going from Bay Area, CA to NY, NY.

Well....Last time I looked to go from Texas to CA where I live, it was $850. Now I did not look at any other rates because I just wanted a rough idea. So it is possible it could be chaper or even more.

Oh by the way, a more fun way to go about this would be to fly there and drive back. That would be my choice.

One of the few factors would be if you want it on a covered trailer or an open trailer. The open will cost a bit less. I don't know of any carriers names, but you may find some names if you do a search. You've probably already tried that, and I'm sure you're looking for a more concrete answer.

FYI, shipped my A4 from SoCal to D.C. with insurance, pick up and drop off on an open trailer and it was $1,023 Try to find a reputable shipper that your're comfortable. Don't nickel and dime over $50...

Big question to ask: Do they own the trucks or sub-contract/sell the job to another carrier. Typically, if the company owns the trucks the experience is better. They typically take care of the vehicles better as they know it's their liability. If they don't own the trucks if you purchase the insurance you have to file your claim with the truck, not the company you paid originally. This can be a pain in the arse from what I heard when I researched it.

I used Dependable Auto Shippers that PWRMKR recommended. I was happy with them. Only complaint I have is that at some point someone got in with greasy hands and I had to clean off the beige plastic (was a little bit of a pain).

I used DAS. Boston to CA in an enclosed truck that you can track was $1500. I got a break from the dealer and only paid $895 to the terminal. S2kredhead just used DAS to ship from Boston to CA for around $1500.

This is good info for me. I will need to ship two cars from DC to Las Vegas in the summer. Uncle sam is sending me to a new base. I hope they have some discount for shipping 2 cars and terminal to terminal. It doesn't seem right that the military doesn't ship at least one car within the continental US for its members.

i did a bunch a research last year, shipping (a miata) from dc to kcmo. ended up not shipping, though. i found that the prices were approx 30 to 50% higher for an enclosed shipment. prices were about $800 on the low to $1,400 on the high. the shippers that can give better (more solid) delivery time estimates were generally more $$, but i felt much more comfortable with their process and their verbal assurances. i checked with about five or six places.

hope this helps.
