no symptoms other than a yellow check engine light. there is no obvious studdering or shimmering engine noise. vtec even works fine, but I'm keeping it below 5 or 6 for the time being. oil leve is fine, everything appears to be tightly sealed up. could be something as minimal as a faulty 02 sensor. but I cannot tell at the moment.

I'm unable to get it to the dealership this week, and probably not going to do that for a while.

so my question is, how serious is this? can a check engine light and the symptoms that are oblivious to me, survive a few hundred miles?

could be many things... there's gotta be a way to check the code on the lights(don't have my service manual just yet). But it could be something as simple as not having tighten the gas cap all the way.

BTW you still in dallas or austin this weekend?

I'm in Dallas right now, trying to get my a$$ back to Austin. I'm curious if I should just go ahead and drive back anyways.

Stop (and shutdown) the car then let it sit for like 5 minutes, then start the car again. If the light persists then it could be serious, and it might void your warranty if you don't get it to a dealer quick (or at least stop driving it).

yup, done the stop and take the key out to reset the ECU thing.

voiding warranty because of it? perhaps if I had bent valves or something, but it doesn't have that - I know what that sounds like.

I'm more questioning anything acting up in the ECU.

There is no way to tell how serious it is without retrieving the code from the ECU. A dealer should be able to plug into the ECU and tell you what is. If it's serious get it fixed, it it's not worry about it later.

Randy, pull fused marked "Back Up" to reset ECU and see if it throws the code (lights MIL) again. If it doesn't I would worry about it (fluke).

Fuse box above your left foot inside.
Right side of panel, 2nd fuse from top (3rd slot from top).
It's the 7.5A fuse that's right between a 15A and a 7.5A.
Pull it out, count to ten and stick it back in (key off).
There's a fuse pulling tool stored about 4 inches to the left nestled in a group of relays.

Once you've done it a couple times, it can be done while sitting in the drivers seat without looking.
