Default Hardtop Owners: Did you remove your soft top?

I considered placing this in the "Under the Hood" forum but thought I would try here for more exposure.

If you did, how long did it take? I'm considering this, but I can't decide if I wanta try to remove it or have the dealer do it. I consider myself fairly mechanically inclined....

Anways I've done plenty of searches and it seems that to install a new softop dealers are asking anywhere between $800-$1250. I did find this PDF file from the Helms manual describing how to install the soft top yourself.

https://www.s2ki.com/article/articleview/132/1/58/

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

I left my soft top on the car. I drive most of the time with the hardtop, but I like knowing that if I want to go for a topless drive, i can still park securely when I decide to stop somewhere. Unless you want to dump a ton of stereo equipment or something back there, I wouldn't bother taking out the top. Personally.

I leave mine on car, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Wesmaster removed his and I think he had the hardtop welded on (or permanantly attached somehow) too.

Putting the top back on, however is a different story. More like a four hour job and one must be very curefull to not scratch the paint.

I really enjoyed my hardtop and thought I might sell off my 02 softtop and frame, but once I took the hardtop off for the spring I remembered why I bought the car. I have since sold my hardtop and have no intentions of ever replacing it.

I have mine out, I put a stereo in there. The only real reason to do it is weight savings if you are racing. The subs are fine in the trunk and I have been rained on twice on the way to work. But on the other hand I almost always have the hard top on and it is fairly easy to put the soft back in. When you remove it, there are 4 small spot welds that need to be cut. other than that no probs.
