s2000 in gumball 3000
for those of you who have heard of the infamous Gumball 3000, I just came back (1hour ago) from the launch of the 2001 edition, in central London.
I was supposed to do it (registered, visa for Russia and everything), but at the last moment I had to let my colleagues go without me (I'm launching a new car magazine, and we entered a car). One of my best friends entered his Black s2000, and he just called me to say how mad the other guys were in the London traffic, swerving and crossing lanes. He was the only s2000 in a huge (100 cars) bunch of super cars (about 7 Diablos, 10-15 Ferraris, porsches, audi RS4's, AC cobras, BMW Z8's, Brabus s600's, a Morgan aero 8, a Catheram, and globally so many expensive cars by square meter that you just wouldn't notice anything anymore.
My friend is a bit nuts, so he's gonna try to break the s2000's speed record, by following a 360 Modena or whichever car is going to be in front of him on the german Autobahn.
This year's gumball is going from london to St Petersburg in 5 days (3000 miles!), & back.

FIRST UPDATE :
my friend just called me from Estonia (I think), to give me details of what happened during the last 2 days :
- first thing : they drove straight from London to Vilnius (capital of lithuania) during 26 hours. He got arrested 5 times for speeding. They went through some really crappy side roads at moments, and even the "main" roads in eastern countries are full of potholes. He spun the car on a wet highway, so he bought new tyres in Vilnius.
- a ferrari crashed (4 rolls)
- 3 cars have been stolen, some by men disguised in custom officers.
- he spent 8 hours in customs
- he was the victim of an attempted car-jacking : driving behind a BMW at night on a higway, he noticed that the driver would not let him pass, slowing down to force him to stay behind, then he noticed another BMW paked with no lights on the hard shoulder, which started as they went past it. In the end, he had to escape via a U-turn, and found other members of the rally to ride in a convoy...
- he says that apparently some local gangsters drive around with big trucks to store the cars after they've stolen them.
All of this was reported to me by mobile phone a few minutes ago, and my friend sometimes emphasizes reality a bit, so I'll get better info from my colleagues soon, but I guess it is all pretty close to reality!
