Honda S2000 Gets Upgrade for 2004

Do you like the Honda S2000? Well, let me put the question differently. Does it do enough for you to personally invest $48,600? As it seems, the answer is no more often than not with the sporty model only trickling out of Honda dealerships.

Its slow sales have little to do with its fun factor though.

With a hyperactive 240-hp and a stratospheric 9,000 rpm redline the little Honda roadster is unlike any other car available. But while a blast to drive on a racetrack or down a winding 2-lane highway, it's anything but fun in stop and go traffic.

Its relatively low torque, 153 lb-ft peaking at a lofty 7,500 rpm, makes getting off the line arduous.


Always willing to improve, Honda will update the S2000 this fall. It will become the S2200, with a 2.2-L 240-hp engine with increased torque lower in the rev range (2003 model shown).

What to do? Honda, usually willing to continue on steadily improving a slow seller that fits its sporting brand image, will update the S2000 this coming fall. Its name will change to S2200, in response to a reworked 2.2-L version of the spicy 4-cylinder.

Reportedly the engine, still producing 240-hp, won't rev quite as high as the 2.0-L in the current model, reducing some of its wow factor, but more torque will come on lower down the rev range to make it more tractable for everyday driving.


The 6-speed manual transmission will be updated with modified gear ratios too, necessary to optimize the torquier engine.

Also, Honda will soften up the suspension to improve ride and enhance handling on bumpy road surfaces.

Other changes include mildly updated front and rear fascias, new oval tailpipes, and a renewed interior. Hopefully the red start button stays

He says the same things others say....

I have heard of people complaining about low torque when trying to launch the car, but if this guy is complaining about low torque in stop and go traffic, he probably can't drive a clutch.

dude, don't get hung up on the "softer" ride....you can cure that for a couple hundred bucks. .....

It sounds like this reviewer read all of the other reviews and saw the photoshopped pictures and reviewed that.

How can there be a review if there is no car in their posession !

no......i'll probably pass.

i didn't realize that my rear shocks were set on full soft.

i adjusted them to full firm and the rear of the car is now SOLID!!!!

i've already taken familiar corners/sweepers and on/off ramps MUCH faster than i ever did/could before....probably 5-10% faster....one in particular that would upset the car badly (which was really pissing me off).

according to speedstar (who drove my car hard) - my rear shocks weren't rebounding quick enough to react to throttle inputs.
