Default In-car video from '03 Nats South Course

Thought I'd start a new thread, as the new one is getting a bit cluttered. This is the best I've got, it's my third run when I already knew I had the championship. It's a pretty sloppy run because I was having a hard time concentrating knowing that I'd won.

http://www.over6racing.com/videos/nats_03_run3.WMV
Watch for 4 key mistakes:

1. Turned in at the wrong cone in the first left-hand sweeper (turnaround after the fast lane change.) I did this on every run like a fly trying to get out of a glass window. Simply wasn't looking far enough ahead. Back to phase1 for me. Turning at this cone screwed up my exit and delayed gas application for the squirt to the slalom.

2. Bobbled a bit in the slalom... a tenth or two.

3. Took hand off wheel as I was thinking of shifting back to first in the right hand turnaround after the slalom. Not as much of a mistake as it is good comedy.

4. Pushed wide exiting the final left-hander before the finish slalom. Caused late throttle application, but not too terrible.

In all, I think a 49.5 to 49.7 was realistic on that course. My nerves didn't let me get that on my second run (didn't catch on tape) and my lack of concentration didn't let me get it on my third run.

Sorry I don't have better video... I wish I had the camera in for Thursday's rain runs! Those were much more entertaining! (partly because that course was so much longer.)

Nice run. Good enough to take home the win!!!

This is Just going off memory from how Mine was around. Looks like your car understeers alot. (that would drive me nuts) but at the same time it looks alot stiffer, and from that I'd say you were generating more grip.

You drove most of the course much better then I did. If you would care for some constructive critism... On the real tight right hander the car looks as if it Pushed a bit and caused you to be pretty late on the throttle. Probably half a second or so late. Also Coming through the slalom (not the finish) You went back to throttle half way between the 2nd to last cone and the last cone. Just for reference I was going back to Full throttle As I approached the 3rd to last cone. On my Media Player that was almost a full 3 seconds earlier.

It's always so Intresting to be able to compare the different styles when the times were so close. Obviously your style works very well as You were the quicker man. I wish I had a camera for Thrusday to Compare. That would have been neat. .029 sec. HEHE, I was a letting the car get a little loose right at the end and having some fun in the wet and Jesse came up to me and said "if you loose by .050 for that stupid show boating I'm gonna kick your ass". Sure enough you came through .029 quicker and Jesse hit me.

EDIT. I just watched it one more time. You Lifted in the Lane Change.... Wussy that was flat, if you were willing to exit with a 1/4 turn of countersteer!

I thought you lost quite a bit in the slalom as it sounded like alot of coasting going on there. Same thing for me on my last run when I was too abrupt on entry.

In some of the tight corners where the car was pushing it looks like there is too much steering input. A natural reaction to being late. Shuffling your hands would probably help a little as well, I think you lose control when you are making fine corrections and your arms are so twisted up. Everybody has their own style, though.

Lifting for the final slalom would depend alot on how well you were getting out of the tight left leading to it. Jason may have had more speed off that corner and getting into the slalom, thus the later throttle application. I was earlier on the throttle than this run, but it wasn't full throttle.

Thanks for posting the video! And congrats! Are you still planning to run the S2000 next year?

I was glad to see Ken M. and Tom B. get their deserved wins (and no disqual. for Tom!).

The funniest thing I've seen recently in SportsCar is the BP rule change to add weight to RX7's. Guess the C4 vette guys are tired of Steve O'Blenes kicking them around. I don't think that weight addition will hurt Steve that much though. His beast was already a point-and-shoot ride.

Great video, very informative. Its interesting to see how our very fast steering ratio allows you not to have to shuffle your hands around a whole lot. Great sound too, helps to really tell what's going on. How do you keep out all the wind noise? Any chance we could bribe you to post a higher resolution of the video so we can see the cones farther out Thanks for posting this for those of us that were not there and congrats on the win!

Thanks guys! I'll see what I can do about a higher res version - Krazik is going to kill me about the bandwidth.

I really wish I had some video of the North course, but with the rain we just didn't bring the camera out - something about water-logging a brand new mini-dv camcorder. There will be some more vid coming of other events now that we have the camera!

If you make a higher res one and post a link or pm me a link, after I downlowd the file I can also make it available here for download to others from my yahoo briefcase (I have about 55 Mb free there). Unfortunately I dont have an email address that could recieve a file that size, else you could just mail me the file and I could post a link for it.
